Quick note and request. Please take a few minutes.
In 2004, the Tourism Industry lobbied hard and got a bill passed that took away the power of our local school boards to set their own calendar. We cannot start school before Aug. 25th. This is an extreme case of MONEY trumping Education. The late start put high school kids who take AP classes, offered only in the spring, at a disadvantage. AP exams are in early May. There is not enough time to cover all the material necessary. It also stresses our teachers in these higher level classes to try to CRAM everything they can into a shortened semester...and the stress flows down to the students. The block schedule has already shortened the time spent on task; some estimate by as much as 18 hours. FOR ONCE, the needs of AG students need to be prioritised.
There is also the issue of having Christmas break before the semester is over. Teachers feel they have to cover the subject in a short block schedule therefore they need kids to do work over the break. We've had projects, papers and more assigned over break. For those of you who travel, and those who don't, it's a real intrusion to what some feel should be family time. Also, you have a two week break, then kids have to come back and review to get ready for exams....just makes no sense.
So, after two years of seeing the results of this bill, the Education Committee has voted to bring it back to the vote and basically override it. It's BILL 359 and goes to vote as soon as next week. You can read more about it at:
http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/559090.html
I encourage you to contact our legislature and ask them to support BILL 359 which returns the power to make decisions about our children's education to our local BOE. Send a message that the Tourism Lobby doesn't own education in North Carolina.
internete-mail.ncleg.net
This email will go to both the House and the Senate. Please take the time. I assure you the Tourism Board is taking the time and the money to defeat this Bill. Remember, the school calendar remains the same at 180 days. Neither bill changes that. It's the start and end date that is in question. THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE LENGTH OF SUMMER VACATION, as the Tourism Lobby would have you believe.
Thanks for taking the time. It may seem like a small thing but when you get to high school block schedule, you will see it makes a difference. Please pass this on to any other lists you may have that would be interested in supporting this return of power to our local boards.

A note about a book which many of you may find interesting on invasive plant species, or weeds.
Wally Kaufman and his daughter, Sylvan, have published a book about invasive plant species. Wally is a well published author and his daughter, equally intelligent and charming, has followed that tradition. The book is very well done and has references via web links as well as in the bibliography. The focus is nationwide. Photographs are clear examples of the plants. The history of these interlopers is included.
Wally Kaufman developed Saralyn and Redbud, was a professor at UNC, an author, a resident of Chatham County for several decades and active in its politics.
The link for the book is: www.invasiveplantguide.com
Thank you.

Too bad about the pines. They offered shade in the summer. I would love to see some native blooming species in that spot. With love and care they could be large in a short while. I would buy at least one tree for such a great community spot.
Thanks to PBO for taking care of that kind of mess. Pines are dying off everywhere for a variety of reasons. It can be a real nuisance. Maybe with enough community support there could be a sponsored effort to replant. How about a community garden? Dan Cahoon 72 Ruby Red Moncure, NC 27559

since this was brought up here a little while ago, below is a link to an article about mercury in cfls. i had mentioned before, often times there are hidden costs (money, health, energy, and/or environmental damage) in the manufacture, use, and/or disposal of energy efficient items, so a certain amount of care should be taken when buying such items.

Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know if CCCC or somewhere local offers a class to get a Certified nursing assistant (CNA) license?
Thanks to everyone that responded in my search for the mobile dog groomer.

You can easily make a homemade flea trap that works great! Just put some water in a large pan with a few drops of dishwashing soap (I used Dawn) then put a lamp on it's side (without the shade) on a chair above the pan. Leave the light on all night and you will be amazed with the number of dead fleas in your pan!!! This works really great and it's almost free!
We used Frontline on our pets for about a year and totally eliminated all fleas....it takes a while but it does work better than anything else we ever tried...

I had bread dog for years and one of my puppies that I bought had parvo. after treatment, the vet told me to buy chicken livers and boil them and mix them with cooked rice, broth and livers and then mash. I have fed this mixture to my sick and ailing dogs many times. It's not too bland and the dogs seem to really like it. It's not too expensive and at least you know what your pet is eating. Good luck.

Many chatlisters enjoyed Monica Howell's posts about her family's adventures with squirrels that had invaded her home.
Now you can see and hear the young story teller and multi-faceted artist. Take a look at the video from inside her Bead Hive business in Pittsboro at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCkMYJZSLYE
Feedback is appreciated.
