Re: fleas
In dealing with pests such as fleas it’s often tempting to look for “the” solution. More often a combination of tactics is likely to be more effective. Such a combination should focus on animals, animal quarters, building interiors, and exteriors. For dealing with pets and/or livestock I always encourage you to work with your veterinarian. S/he may suggest a pesticide. If the animal is part of the ecosystem, it must be included in the solution in some way. Daily grooming can also be important as well as cleaning the sites where fleas are found.
Ticks like most insects go through several life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae feed on organic matter including the excrement of adult fleas and pets. So routine (daily) sanitation such as vacuuming can make a big difference both in removing food sources and in removing the larvae themselves. Empty the vacuum thoughtfully.
As larvae mature, they enter a resting pupal stage and may emerge from resting in response to some specific environmental cue. Cues may include carbon dioxide levels (exhaling pets or humans) and/or vibrations (footsteps). People sometimes use aerosol “bombs” that have little impact on the protected pupae. But when humans return, their footsteps and exhalations may cue emergence of hungry adults. Unfortunately these aerosol products seldom provide good coverage under furniture, beneath cushions, deep into carpets, and other places where fleas may be found.
Some basic strategies for breaking the reproductive cycle include consulting a veterinarian about treatments for pets, washing pet bedding in hot soapy water, daily vacuuming, and use of insecticides that include an insect growth regulator (IGR). IGRs are naturally occurring chemicals that retard the development of immature fleas to adults. These naturally occurring products are mimicked and synthesized by chemists to make them available for use in control. When used according to the product label these materials may prevent immature fleas from reaching adulthood. Without maturing to adulthood, they cannot breed and lay eggs. The reproductive cycle is broken. These IGRs are often mixed with an “adulticide” for broader control but are sometimes available separately. IGRs to look for in the fine print include pyriproxifen and methoprene.
To summarize: consult a veterinarian about treatment for pets; brush pets daily; wash materials where pets rest indoors; vacuum daily – pay attention to carpets, furniture, under cushions, under furniture, anywhere that pets and/or fleas spend time; pay attention to pets’ outdoor habitats; consider use of an insect growth regulator.

reply to Tom Glendenning re Trees
Dear Tom:
Thank you for the information regarding the trees, but the current Pittsboro Council is looking for a solution and has no money to buy trees and needs to protect the children Believe me they were not happy.
They are attempting from what I observed to maintain and create a safe, beautiful community. Yes planning is an issue but then again so are trees..
They understand the value of the trees but were just informed the pines at the Kiwanis center were diseased. I was very pleased to see the concern for the trees, the environment and the safety of the children that currently play at the park.
The town at this time has enough money to take the old trees out so limbs do not fall on the children at play, but not enough to put new ones in. It is not that they do not value them but pot holes, street repairs, water mains and other items that have fallen into disrepair over the last number of years have a higher priority.
If a club, conservation group, environmental group could help that would be a solution to having no trees for our community at all, even a small tree will grow with nurturing,
The town has already been graciously offered one shade tree by an individual. Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing to have three more and have our communities children and grandchildren remember the planting of it and continue to have natural a place to play.
I noticed that you are a licensed landscaper any solutions????

Hey all,
I'm looking for a good, local landscaper who will do a good job of mercy killing my old, weed-choked lawn and installing a new one. I know everyone is busy at this time of year, but seriously, Pittsboro will be a better town for everyone if I can get some help fixing this front lawn. It's a real eyesore.
Also, hanks for the info on hiking trails -- I'm going to be putting all of your great suggestions together and sharing them with all of you. Thanks!

I'd love a good arguement on the chatlist. It gets minds going and often ends with some really fantastic ideas brought forth.
However, when I get harassing emails from the wife of the mayor when my posting topic is town govn't related, I draw the line.
I don't remember her name on the ticket for the mayoral election, and I think its bad policy to have an attack dog as part of your team.
If you have a response to a chatlist posting of mine, do it on the list, not in the shelter of harassing emails. I will out you.
It is also because of the same dog, their are some of us who are NOT re-newing our PMA membership.
