As a Horse Professional & Animal Rescuer/Rehaber for 45years, I've delt with the GAPS and GREY AREAS in state/local systems for saving animals. In my experiences the biggest battles I've encountered is "Effective Source" of communications for animal owners & animal agencies. I want to encourage Gene to include an issue in The Chatlist exclusively for All Animals in a weekly posts provide updates for pet owners and perhaps delived Thurs. for looker to plan weekend? This would be an excellent expansion to Chatlist and Chatham's MUCH NEEDED communications & community service to feature posts for the following: Lost..Found..For Sale..Find Pet Homes..Helpful Hint and any animal related articles. I hope this can become the county's place to post animals recovered and really help to reunite the pets or place pets to good homes, possibally saving alot of lives in the process..BRAVO !! Hello there. I just learned about this workshop. Unfortunately I will be in another
workshop this weekend, but thought that there may be folks who would like to have this information.
Cathy Holt
There's a Pittsboro Land Use Planning Public Workshop at CCCC later this
week. The Town of Pittsboro seeks guidance about how to shape future growth in and
around the town. A three-day public workshop will help frame the desires of
the town and create a policy document that will shape the town for years to
come.
Date: March 29, 30 & 31
Time: 10:00 AM start daily
Place: Multi-purpose room at Central Carolina Community College
Highlights:
Thursday, March 29, 10AM-7PM: Existing Conditions Introduction
Friday, March 30, 10AM-3:30PM: Walkability, Preferences Survey
Saturday, March 31, 10AM-5PM: Future Land Use, Design Guidelines
"This is an opportunity for area residents to participate
directly in the planning process designed to make Pittsboro a
more walkable and attractive place for people of all ages to
live, work and visit," stated Mayor Voller, who will help lead
walking tours starting at 10 am at CCCC and 4 pm at the General
Store Café in downtown Pittsboro. "By encouraging people to walk
in our community and neighborhoods, Pittsboro will be a safer,
healthier and friendlier town."

OVERVIEW of WORKSHOP SCHEDULE!
The three-day public workshop kicks off with a general
introduction on Thursday, March 29, at 10 am at CCCC's large
meeting room at its Pittsboro campus just west of town on U6 64.
Area residents are invited to visit that day and provide their
input and preferences concerning the future land use and design
of the town. At 6 p.m. on Thursday there will be a public
introduction session providing the overview of the existing land
use conditions and explanation of the workshop process for the
remaining two days. Following Friday's focus on walking tours
and visual preferences, Saturday's public session will start at
10 am and end at 5 pm. Planners and citizens will work together
with the data and information gathered during the previous two
days to draft future land use plans, maps, and design guidelines
for the town.
Triangle J Council of Governments, of which Pittsboro is a
member, is working with the town under a contract to develop an
updated comprehensive land use plan for the town. Following the
workshop, there will be a series of focus groups on specific
topic areas with designated stakeholders and professionals. Once
a draft plan has been developed, the Town plans to hold another
public meeting with citizens to present the plan and obtain
additional public input.

Director David Monroe at 542-4621, ext. 34 or Triangle J

John Wasson wrote to recommend that we buy more locally. I commend his attitude. And on a positive note I must respond to his mentioning that we may not be able to find Gucci shoes or almond paste here. Actually what is so amazing is that when it comes to shoes New Horizons in Pittsboro has the best selection of quality shoes that I have found anywhere in the Triangle and that almond paste? You can get it here in Pittsboro also at the MarketPlace.....our local co-op. I found it there recently when I was needing it to make a dinner party desert! Three cheers for Pittsboro! FYI
2007 Spring Litter Sweep (April 14-28) We need volunteers to participate in the Governor's proclaimed LITTER SWEEP cleanup of North Carolina's roadsides. Help beautify your community by locally participating in this cleanup event.
Participants are eligible to receive a certificate of appreciation and enter the Most Unusual Litter Contest for cash prizes. Promotional materials suitable for printing can be found by clicking here on forms (spring 2007). These are in PDF format.
About Litter Sweep:
a.. Litter Sweep is a statewide roadside litter cleanup drive sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). It is a biannual event usually scheduled for the last two weeks of April and September. The NCDOT Office of Beautification Programs administers the Spring and Fall Litter Sweep.
b.. Governor Easley issues a proclamation prior to each cleanup to encourage North Carolina citizens, businesses, local governments, civic groups and Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) volunteers to participate in making our state clean, green and beautiful.
c.. Volunteers can obtain pick up supplies as orange trash bags, blue bags (for items to be recycled), orange safety vests and gloves from any of the NCDOT's county maintenance offices.
d.. NCDOT maintenance crews devote one week of their time during Litter Sweep to pick up litter and collect orange bags from the roadsides once the groups have completed a cleanup.
e.. Everyone's participation in Litter Sweep is needed in order to clean up the increasing amount of roadside litter.
Call the Litter Sweep Hotline (800-331-5864) for more information.

I hope someone among the readers of the 'List can help me locate a hardcover copy (in good condition) of Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss, Ph.D. My son-in-law graciously loaned me his brand new hardcover copy of the book. I took it with me to WakeMed to read while waiting for my husband to have a procedure, and left it behind when I gathered up our things to go home. It was pouring rain, and we were already on the way home when I realized I'd left the book at the hospital. I didn't want to go back for it, and just figured I'd replace it with a new one. What a mistake! It's out of print, except in paperback. I've tried McIntyre's at Fearrington Village, the Regulator Bookshop's website, and Barnes and Noble (they checked all B&N stores in the area, and even called the publisher, Random House!) No luck. Not much encouragement, either.
If you know where I may find the book in hardcover, please respond by email. And if you have a copy you're willing to part with, please let me know whether you might sell it to me. I bought a paperback copy right away, and have been reading that, but I feel really awful to be unable to replace Michael's real book.

We've been giving our dog garlic chews every day and that has done a great job to keep the fleas under control. Not so good with ticks so in the summer we supplement with Frontline.

Hi! I don't know how your experience with the glasses' store besides the the eye clinic in PBO has been. But for me, horrible. I did order a prescription glasses 2 weeks ago, and they still working on them! The worst of the story is that a coworker told me not go there, but for time issues I rrust them and did it. Now, my frustration and patience is at their limits, and the only step I can think is ask for my money back and make the order somewhere else, and wait for other 8-10 days! We need more responsible and profesional bussinesses here in PBO if we want to grow as a town. Any comments?

I would like to encourage everyone in Chatham County and other counties to visit our three PTA Thrift Shops. They are located in Siler City, Pittsboro, and Cole Park Plaza. The PTA Thrift Shops take in donations from the public and resale them. The profit is distributed to ALL of our Chatham County Public Schools, based on an equal distribution scale and volunteers hours. I would like everyone reading this to visit the stores-shop at the stores, donate to the stores, and VOLUNTEER at the stores. The store employees will show you what they need done when you volunteer. Anything from hanging clothes, putting items on the sales floors, any number of things. The volunteer time can be given to any school in Chatham County. The time is turned into money for that school. When you clean out your closets--remember the thrift shop and donate. When you have an hour or more of free time(I understand it is hard to find free time)--but remember the thrift shop. The thrift shop has a variety of items that change from day to day and you can not beat the prices. And the most important thing of all is the time and money you spend in the thrift shop helps our Ch atham CountyPublic Schools. Don't forget there are drop off boxes all over the county where you can drop off your donations. The thrift shop needs volunteers to help clean out these boxes-contact the stores for details. Ask at your schools if you can help with a work night or drop box. If you have a special trade, plumping, electric, carpentry contact the stores and volunteer your time. Again the time can be turned into money for any public school in Chatham County. -------------------- 19 -------------------- Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2007 17:24:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Jennifer Gillis <hawrivereditorial.yahoo.com> Subject: Obsessive-compulsive cardinal
Hoping that someone will be able to help me with a wildlife question. My mother has a female cardinal who appears to be desperately trying to get into one of her windows. My theory was that the bird was seeing her reflection in the window, thinking it was another bird, and was trying to get rid of it. We've tried putting a tea-towel in the window to cut down on the reflection, and my mother has moved some things around in the area to make it a little more difficult for the bird to "hang out." But, the bird continues to fly against the window and refuses to leave my mother's deck. I've seen this behavior in male cardinals before, but not in females. Can anyone tell me why she's doing this and what we can do to get her to stop (we don't want her to injure herself)?
Thanks! Jennifer

To Melody re: trees in the park
Should our planning process and contracting procedures graduate to a full professional level, these sad results would not need review. Licensed landscape architects or contractors, if consulted during the planning process, would offer good suggestions and practices which would save or replace trees in the contract process, honoring the priorities of the owner/organization/local government. Unfortunately, this step is often overlooked for "budget considerations" or worse. A mature shade tree is presently valued at approximately $ 50.00 per square inch of trunk area at breat height diameter. There are some factors influencing the value of a specific tree, like species, condition and location.
However, the general concept is that these old timers are worth a great deal (not at all like people in the workplace.) For instance, a tree measuring six inches across at breat height may be worth $ 1400, more or less, at 100 % of all factors. Trees with 24 inch diameter are worth tens of thousands of dollars, at 100% of factors. And insurance companies respect these values, as well as the IRS, in the case of casualty loss. The American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) offers valuation of shade trees and has for decades.
Practices may be employed during site grading and construction which can preserve old trees. Unfortunately, these are not often used or specified.
Professional installation comes with a guarantee, usually one year from final inspection. So a few dollars spent up front will save many dollars later. The adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" come to mind.
