Hi!
I'm starting to think about how bad the fleas were last year and worrying about how I'm going to deal with this again this year. I wonder if anyone knows of a solution. I don't want to use pesticides or harm the environment. Is there anything I can use instead??
Thanks, Tamera

The town is working on the tennis courts, basketball courts and ball field across from Pittsboro Primary school. They look great...The park is beginning to look great.
Last night at the town meeting the town council found out that the 4 remaining trees will have to be taken down, they are dying. They were not happy because they want trees for shade at the newly improved site.
Is there a girl troop, boy troop, little league team, nursery, that could donate a tree???Rotary Club, Gardening club?? Fast growing to provide shade on those hot spring and summer days while the kids play ball???

What follows is the full text of Section 1-6 of the Chatham County Animal Control Ordinance:
Section 1-6. Keeping Stray Animals: Requirements, Failure to Surrender.
A. It shall be unlawful for any person in Chatham County to knowingly and intentionally harbor, feed, keep in possession by confinement, or otherwise allow to remain on his property, any animal which does not belong to him, unless he has, within 72 hours from the time such animal came into his possession, notified the Animal Control Division. The Animal Control Division, in consultation with the person keeping the animal, shall decide whether to pick the animal up and transport it to the Animal Control Shelter or whether the person shall keep the animal until the owner is notified if known or becomes known. The Animal Control Division shall notify the owner in writing or by telephone, if known. If the animal is not transported to the (shelter), then the Animal Control Division shall post on bulletin board prominently displayed at the (shelter) a notice including a description of the animal, the time and place of its first appearance, and the date of the posting of the notice. Such bulletin shall be in public view at all times. Should the owner if known, not claim his animal within five days after notice of the animal's location, the person keeping the animal may adopt the animal according to the procedure for adoption of un-redeemed animals or the Animal Control Division may dispose of the animal pursuant to the policies specified herein.
B. It shall be unlawful for any person to refuse to surrender any such stray animal to the Animal Control Division upon demand.
I think this section of the ordinance is well designed to assure the best possible outcome for dogs and cats seen as stray but also for pets possibly lost or at large.
Thanks.

Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 11:39:44 -0500 From: Bob Cannon <bcannonbal...gmail.com> Subject: Has the Chatlist gone to the dogs?
I wonder if others feel lile I do, so I'm going to throw it out there.
I've been a fairly long-time chatlist memebr and have enjoyed many of the discussions on this chatlist (including the "intense" ones during the election seasons.)
Overall I find the the chatlist to be a very useful daily source of information about what's happening in Chatham County.
Here's where my problem comes in -
The discussion about Shelby (per our moderator I am not going "there") seems to have demonstrated to me the inadequate nature of the channels of communications within the county and community about missing dogs and cats.
I'm not sure that I want to turn over this chatlist to the dogs (and cats, etc).
In fact if you go over to the Chatham Animal Rescue's missing animals page at http://www.chathamanimalrescue.org/lostfound.shtml you find that the chatlist is listed 2nd as a place to look for your missing pets.
If you look at the Noah's Ark section of the bulletin board at http://chatham-county-nc.com/bulletinboard/index.php/board,9.0.html it appears that on average 100-200 people look at any one missing animal post. I don't know what the traffic is like on other missing pet sites (or even what these sites are like)
Maybe I'm out of line but I'd like to hear what other chatlist members think and if Gene doesn't mind I'd like to have this discussion on the chatlist. Maybe we can come up with some ideas on how the groups like the Chatham Animal Control, rescue groups, or possibly any other group can help get the word out on pets.
To the average person like me it looks like a lot of this is disjointed and that there does not appear to be one "clearinghouse" for this information. Maybe I'm wrong but at the moment it appears that the best chance to find your missing animal is to post a notice to the chatlist. We're also starting to see adoption notices for pets here. If there is a better way I would like to know. We have a Friday Classifed Chatlist. Do we need an animal chatlist?
Can we come together and come up with some ideas and solutions to better get out the information. And if those solutions are already out there (I don't know about you, but I'm not very aware of them) can you share that information with us. I know some of you are sick and tired of this subject, but maybe there is something to help this situation along.

According to a recent post on the Chatham Online bulletin board, 56% of our sales tax dollars are supporting the infrastructure of neighboring counties. So, one thing we can do to make a difference is to shop in Chatham County instead. Granted, you won't be able to buy a pair of Gucci loafers, and may have trouble finding almond paste in a Chatham grocery store, but I have trouble believing that 56% of our lost sales tax dollars are going for such stuff. We need infrastructure improvements, they cost money, the money has to come from somewhere. To buy your dog food here doesn't cost any more than buying it in Orange or Durham counties as you leave work in the Research Triangle Park, or UNC, the problem is the sales tax you're paying doesn't help pay for a new road or school here. Mr. Shook, at J. Henry Hardware has ordered things for me he did not carry in stock, I've also ordered items from both Food Lion and Lowes Foods in Pittsboro.
So, to answer the question,"What can I do to make a difference?" I reply "Buy Locally!"

Citizens invited to help make Pittsboro a more walkable town
Would you like to make Pittsboro a more walkable town? An alliance of local, state and national civic and advocacy organizations, along with Pittsboro Mayor Randy Voller and Triangle J Council of Governments, invite area residents to participate in walking tours of Pittsboro on Friday, March 30. The walking tours or "audits" will be held on the second day of a three-day land use planning public workshop being sponsored by the Town of Pittsboro at the Central Carolina Community College {CCCC] campus to obtain citizen input on the direction and design of the town's future growth.
"This is an opportunity for area residents to participate directly in the planning process designed to make Pittsboro a more walkable and attractive place for people of all ages to live, work and visit," stated Mayor Voller, who will help lead walking tours starting at 10 am at CCCC and 4 pm at the General Store Café in downtown Pittsboro. "By encouraging people to walk in our community and neighborhoods, Pittsboro will be a safer, healthier and friendlier town."
The walking audits are being organized by the North Carolina Smart Growth Alliance, a statewide advocacy and educational organization located in downtown Pittsboro that promotes mixed-use, walkable communities and place-based economic development. Assisting the Alliance in conducting these walking audits are Active Chatham, a local grass-roots health alliance organized by the Chatham County Health Department, the Chatham County Recreation Advisory Council and Recreation Department, Active Living by Design, a national organization headquartered at UNC Chapel Hill that promotes walkable and bikable communities, Triangle J Council of Governments and the town planner.
"Promoting pedestrian-oriented infrastructure and land use in our town will provide clear economic benefits," stated Jeffrey Starkweather, Executive Director of the Smart Growth Alliance, who is also a Pittsboro resident and board member of the Chatham County Economic Development Corporation. "There is solid evidence community walkability is a tourist magnet, is good for retail sales and increases property values. More importantly, investing in a community design that encourages walkability has long term health benefits that can result in improved school performance, increased worker productivity and reduction of family and community medical expenses."
Walkers will divide into groups to walk several pre-designated areas of town, including from CCCC to the downtown, from Churchwood Lane along the town's utility right-of-way to Town Lake Park and onto Horton Middle School, from downtown Pittsboro to both Chatham Mills on 15/501 north where the Chatham Market is located and to the post office on 64 east, and throughout the downtown area. Walkers will be asked to suggest how to make their routes safer and easier to walk, and to comment on the visual appearance of buildings and streetscapes. The information gathered during these walking tours will be used by Paul Black, the Principal Planner for Triangle J, Pittsboro Planning Director David Monroe and N.C State Design students to draft future land use plans and design guidelines for these areas of town.
The three-day public workshop kicks off with a general introduction on Thursday, March 29, at 10 am at CCCC's large meeting room at its Pittsboro campus just west of town on U6 64. Area residents are invited to visit that day and provide their input and preferences concerning the future land use and design of the town. At 6 p.m. on Thursday there will be a public introduction session providing the overview of the existing land use conditions and explanation of the workshop process for the remaining two days. Following Friday's focus on walking tours and visual preferences, Saturday's public session will start at 10 am and end at 5 pm. Planners and citizens will work together with the data and information gathered during the previous two days to draft future land use plans, maps, and design guidelines for the town.
Triangle J Council of Governments, of which Pittsboro is a member, is working with the town under a contract to develop an updated comprehensive land use plan for the town. Following the workshop, there will be a series of focus groups on specific topic areas with designated stakeholders and professionals. Once a draft plan has been developed, the Town plans to hold another public meeting with citizens to present the plan and obtain additional public input.
For more information on the three-day workshop contact Planning Director David Monroe at 542-4621, ext. 34 or Triangle J Principal Planner Paul Black at 558-9397. For more information about participating in the Thursday's walking tours contact Jeffrey Starkweather at 417-0969 or e-mail Pittsboro Mayor, Randy Voller at randy...voller.org.
