Debbie,
    We installed a system by CPI Security Systems (1 800 948 7133) about 6 months ago, and we have been very pleased with their entire package, from sales to a professional installation, follow-up, and their response system (out of Charlotte).
 
   We worked with Earnest Hackney at 599-9162, I believe he works out of their Raleigh office, but he was glad to come out to NE Chatham.  We would highly recommend CPI, and working with Earnest was a pleasure.

Subject: Frustrated about county landfill hours

Anyone else frustrated that the county landfill closes before 4 pm on weekdays and doesn't even open at all on Saturdays?  If a county resident has landfill appropriate items, I don't think they should have to take off work early just to make it there before it closes.  Especially in the spring and summer, hours should be extended to 7 pm weekdays and open all day Saturday.

I realize that I usually just post with minor pet-peev-y stuff but I want to post a compliment this time.

I was in The Natural Pet Health Store the other day and Tammy & I were discussing the recent dog food poisonings/recalls.  I thought she would probably say something to the effect that this incident shows why pet owners should be buying premium food for their pets but she didn't.  Her comments were that her heart was broken and that she felt so sorry for all of the pet owners whose pets had died or gotten sick.

Tammy is one of the most compassionate, caring people I know & I just wanted to publicly say how impressed I was with her attitude in this horrible situation.

Kudos, Tammy - Thanks for being the wonderful, caring individual you are!

Our feisty, adventurous, black and white cat Teddy decided to stow away for a trip to the dump. We noticed her in the back seat on the way and thought, foolishly, oh well, maybe cats like car rides as much as dogs. She slipped out of the car while we weren't looking, either at the dump near Crutchfield Crossroads or at a subsequent stop at CVS in downtown Siler City. Subject: Farm tour coming up!!

I know it is a few weeks away, but don't forget to reserve April 21 and 22 for the Piedmont Farm tour.  The pre-tour kick off is on Thursday, April 19th at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro 6-8 pm and the farm tour covers a huge area which includes lots of great places in Chatham including (drum roll please) CCCC where we (Sofia's Farm) will have baby animals both days for folks to see and perhaps pet as well as some rare breed livestock and we'll also have some meat for sale.  Please check out the carolina farm stewardship association webpage www.carolinafarmstewards.org for more information.  I personally love the farm tour and have for years.  It was initially a way to connect with farmers and rural life when I was "citified" and then became a glimpse into what I aspired to and gradually it became a way to see how other people do their farms with tons of great ideas to use ourselves and now it is a great honor to be on the tour (even in this small way) and watch people conn  ect with farming and farmers on this really great adventure.  See you there!

The Rocky Mount Art Center will present the exhibition, Clyde Jones:
Critters, March 17 - June 10, 2006.  An opening reception will be held Friday April 13, 7pm -9 pm, and is free to the public

On display are wood sculptures and paintings by Clyde Jones internationally recognized folk artist from Bynum, North Carolina.
Using a chainsaw to carve chunks of cedar wood Jones sculpts a variety of animal forms which are then brightly painted and decorated with assorted castoff junk items. Clyde also creates paintings and murals and his home is a decorated work of art in its own right.

Jones a 68-year-old former mill worker began making his critters after a work related injury forced him leave his occupation. Inspired by the natural forms, his critters show all the whimsy, imagination and creativity of a natural outsider artist who found his artistic calling late in life.

Clyde's sculpture can be found throughout the small town of Bynum, about 10 miles outside of Pittsboro North Carolina. He has become so well known and loved that an annual ClydeFest is held by the Chatham County Arts Council, and he has been presented with the first "Chatham Country Cultural Treasure Award."  The critters have been exhibited all over the world, from the Great Wall of China to the Smithsonian Institution.

Clyde Jones finds his inspiration in nature and in the natural forms found in roots and stumps. He likes to incorporate castoff junk into his works and considers this a form of recycling. "You'd be surprised how much is wasted, you really would. A lot of other countries would be glad to have it."

I've seen enough plants growing around and over railroad ties to suggest that they are not likely to have inhibited the growth of your vegetable plants.  Large rocks can certainly be an impediment to tillage, and tillage is often not friendly to nearby trees in residential areas; the roots extend much farther than branches and are important to the trees' longevity.  Raised beds are a good alternative and the readily available rocks may be a tool if they are not too big to move.  But we may need to continue exploring reasons for your disappointments.

Two specific thoughts on the soil:  Gardeners must be concerned with two types of soil properties, physical properties and chemical properties.
Physical: Much of the soil in Chatham County is heavy with high clay content. Low permeability makes clay slow to absorb water. Once it gets wet, it drains poorly and is slow to dry out. If the soil has been subjected to compaction from construction equipment or even regular foot traffic, it may be insufficiently aerated and plants may not thrive. The ability of the soil to absorb and hold water and air is included among its physical properties. Heavy clay soils may be very difficult to dig and work.

Chemical: If the soil has never been farmed or gardened (or even if it has), it may lack nutrients and may not readily yield nutrients to plants even when fertilizers are applied. This nutrient status is referred to as its chemical property. Native soils may be too acid for plants to thrive.
