Small black puppy with wonderful, soulful eyes; little white on tips of paws, and under chin.
Apparently wandered off and wandered far to land on my doorstep making puppy howls and barks at 4:30 am.
Sweet puppy who ate hungrily, drank water, and welcomed being held and rubbed. Quickly settled on a pillow and blanket.
If you are missing this beautiful puppy, please call during the day at 998-2042 (RTP) or evenings at 776-5027, ask for Sherri.
Puppy was lost on Lydia Perry Road in southern Chatham.

Many of us are in the process of registering our students for high school. So many questions about Honors and what to take. I am pleased to see such an increase in the numbers of advanced (honors and AP) classes in the county, particularly at Northwood.
Our kids need to be challenged. Then again, the following is an example of a NINTH grade Honors Eng. prompt from last year. So be aware, some of these classes are quite a bit beyond what your child has EVER seen in middle school:
After reading the book Lord of the Flies and watching the movie Pitch Black the assignment was to write and contrasting/comparative essay on this prompt:
Lord of the Flies/Pitch Black Essay "Human nature can be modified to some extent, but human nature cannot be changed." Abraham Lincoln Considering the quote above, write a well-organized essay comparing and contrasting human nature in the Lord of the Flies and Pitch Black. Are humans essentially good (Rousseau) or evil (Golding)? What are the forces that affect and/or modify human nature? Does human nature change or evolve in response to societal systems and/or the instinctual desire to survive life-threatening situations? How important a role does one's basic personality type play in reaction to these situations? Your response should incorporate these considerations using your knowledge of both texts, philosophies, and personality types as supporting evidence.
Boy....was that fun???? Get back to me when you have that written....lol.

Very nice dog; well-mannered, good with children and cats and other dogs. Has not bothered the chicken and goats. I've posted pictures of him on my website at www.karentiede.com. Page down a little to the bottom of the page.
Please call me if you know where he's from or if you can give him a real home.

Mr. Theye,
While I generally agree that the land transfer tax is necessary (if we don't want our property taxes to go up), I do not think that your post is any more helpful than Ms. Johnson's. Let's find the common ground here as conservatives and progressives. We are in this situation because residential development alone does not pay for the infrastructure required to support those residents, most notably with respect to schools. What models of development are there that we can all agree to, regardless of our political leanings? How can we encourage sustainable business development to provide additional tax revenue that alleviates the pressures put on our infrastructure as a result of the large number of residential developments already approved? This does not need to be a zero sum conversation where winner takes all.
People will say I'm naive, but I believe people of very different ideologies can come together to create solutions that incorporate traditionally conservative and liberal values for the greater good of this county.
Thanks for considering my point of view. Peace, Pete

Hi- I am a little confused... If this is a ONE TIME Land transfer Tax, paid at the time of closing, and at this point only 1%,... And it goes to make it easier to get to and from where we need to go,... How is it HORRIBLE? I mean, let's face it.. no one wants to pay more for ANYTHING that we can avoid. We keep Sam's and Costco, and walmart and Target in business for a reason. But, if it is not increasing my land tax yearly, and only if I buy/sell, then I CAN avoid paying it, by not buying or selling land. Do I have this right? I know it probably seems a little sarcastic, I can not help it. But I truly am interested in the answer. Thanks!

I read with shock and dismay the letters from advocates of higher taxes, some of which were nasty beyond what I would consider socially acceptable.
Since the average NC citizen is paying almost 50% of his income in taxes and compliance costs, I must ask the question, how much more?
How much more do you think we need to pay? Is it 75% Is it 100% Remember that as the amount we pay in taxes increases the amount left to feed our families, pay for clothes, and provide shelter decreases. Soon you can forget about extras like a nice car or color tv or whatever else you feel you have earned with the sweat of your brow. It will all belong to government so that politicians can buy votes.
Also, you need to understand this is not a tax on someone else. This is a tax on all of us. The sales tax on your home is not exempted because you have lived here already. If you need to sell and buy a larger homw because you are having children now, you will still pay the tax. If you are elderly and need to sell your home, your primary investment, to move into a smaller place and have some money to live out your golden years, well, you are not exempt either. Do not believe the propaganda. No one is exempted. I suggest everyone read the actual proposals.
Think also about the current system of impact fees. This money is actually paid on new construction which DOES impact infrastructure. So why weren't existing homes excluded from this proposed tax increase, if it was about infrastructure? The answer is simple. It isn't about infrastructure and the impact of new construction. It is about money.
There are so many issues with the constant and increasing efforts to raise out taxes tha they cannot all be discussed in this format. I would suggest people get involved and educate themselves on this issue. Our families are being taxed beyond our ability to bear it. I would leave you with this quote:
"An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy; because there is a limit beyond which no institution and no property can bear taxation."

Since everyone is now actively switching to using the lower energy compact fluorescent light bulbs, I wanted to know how to safely dispose of the bulb after use. The local recycling/trash center attendant informed me to "just toss it in the compactor and he'd look the other way".
These bulbs have mercury in them. I wasn't about to put it in the compactor. So I called Chatham County Waste Management. The gentleman was very helpful. In fact the law of proper disposal of these mercury bulbs only applies to businesses even though it's the same bulb used in residential. Residential can "toss in the compactor". I still don't want to do this.
So the solution? On the 3rd Saturday each month at the county landfill off Hwy 64 between Pittsboro and Siler City there is the Household Hazardous Waste Program http://www.chathamrecycles.com/household.shtml
You can take your bulbs there and they will dispose of safely so the mercury doesn't leach into our groundwater.

I am looking at this from a dual perspective; one side is a local business owner who is eagerly awaiting an increase in consumers for my services and the other side is the guy who moved to the country to live in a quiet, low tax, low traffic rural setting in the woods. The internal turmoil is interesting to witness from the cheap seats.
The rhetorical question asking if anyone wants to pay more taxes is so simplistic in the face of the current situation in our county. Whether you are in favor of the new developments that are coming as I am, or deeply opposed as I am, there are going to be some exceptionally large expenses coming in the near future for the county to cover. Taxes were destined to go up the day that the new developments were approved by our duly elected board of commissioners. Now we, as a combined group, have a choice of how to pay for it. I don't see this as a question of "if" we want to pay higher taxes or not, just "how" to apportion the upcoming expenses in the most equitable manner.
I don't have any children, but it is obvious that we do not have sufficient school facilities to properly educate the current numbers of children in the county and just building new schools alone is a daunting expense that seems unavoidable at this point. How many new school children will come with the 10,000 to 12,500 houses that are going to be built? How long will it take to build these schools and when will they be needed? This should be underway right now, but we are having problems paying for plumbing, and other basic maintenance of the existing schools right now. That is a big tax hike waiting to happen.
Water, sewer, fire, police, rescue, parks, roads and other infrastructure increases will be coming as well and all those will have hefty price tags. I personally feel sorry for the gentlemen who are now in county office who have to make the tough, unpopular, decisions that are facing our county. Taxes are going to go up around here.
I hope people will remember who made the decisions that are leading to these unpopular tax increases and don't take out their discontent on the people who are left to clean up the mess.

CB, The land transfer tax does not only affect new-comers, it affects all of us tax paying citizens who want to buy a home, sell a home, buy land, sell land, and improve our/their way of life. Which includes starting your own business. She had it correct when she said folks in Chatham don't want this. Some folks in NE Chatham do want this but not everything revolves around them either. We as tax paying citizens can not let a small group of individuals make the rules for the entire county.
Peter, First get over yourself, the world does not revolve around you. The proposed tax is not to build infrastructure. It is however a way for the current BOC to help fund a Multi-Cultural Museum and Performing Arts Auditorium that we don't need. It is also a way to tax us citizens so that they, the BOC, can give more money to non-profit organizations that I don't care to donate too. The only reason they want to donate to these causes is so that people like you can be forced into giving. I on the other hand already give to multiple Non-Profit organizations at my own free will. The only thing nonsensical is your post. You want to attack people for expressing their views, then prepare to be attacked. If you think the current BOC is going to be conservative with your money, think again. They are pushing for more taxes, so that they can spend more of our hard earned dollars. Remember Pete we are all watching you, TOO.

There will be a discussion of the different herbicides that are labeled for use in pasture and when we may want to use them and when definitely not to use them. In this class we will also look at the relationship between controlling weeds in the summer and fall and the reduction of weed populations in the spring. Hi all - Since moving to the area we've been a little disappointed in the luck we've had with gardening. We couldn't get into the ground because of all the rocks! There was a raised bed already on the property so we thought we'd use that. However, nothing from our vegetable garden made it. I'm thinking part of the problem was the fact that the garden bed was outlined with railroad ties. From what I've read in the past months, you're not supposed to grow food in a raised bed that has been lined with treated wood. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make inexpensive raised beds? Or does anyone know if a tiller would work in this area? We live off of Mt. Gilead...so if anyone around here has any tips for success, please share!
Also - can anyone recommend a company that supplies gravel at a reasonable price? We're interested in putting more gravel into our driveway. From what I've been told it's crushed bluestone, so I guess that's what we need. I would say it ranges from 1 inch pieces to 2.5 inch pieces. If anyone knows of a place that delivers at a decent price, please let us know! Thanks, Laura and Michele
