Folks in Chatham County do not want their taxes raised again! They do no want a 1% Land Transfer Tax, that has no guarantee of staying at 1% and there is NO guarantee that it will replace the current impact fee.
Now, according to Commissioner Mike Cross, the State Government wants the revenue from the 1% Land Transfer Tax! See his blog for more information on this. This is just ONE danger of trying to implement such a tax - everyone wants a piece of the pie! Now Commissioner Cross is asking us to band together to KEEP this proposed tax revenue. It is a dangerous game the current Commissioners are playing. The answer is - DO NOT implement the tax increase in the first place!
I have had several people ask me what they can specifically do to let our elected officials know they do not want the 1% Land Transfer Tax. I believe we CAN make a difference if we act now! Here's how:
Please visit our website at the the link below for a template of a letter opposing this tax. We have included all of the contact information for you. You can e-mail or fax your completed letter to let YOUR voice be heard!

I just e-mailed my letter to the County Manager and Commissioners as well as our Representatives, Atwater and Speaker Hackney. It was easy and took about 15 minutes. If we all take 15 minutes we can really make a difference.

It sounds like there's a lot of comments about "no headliners" for the Grassroots Festival. Keep in mind also that headliners cost more and they have not really helped the bottomline.
But it doesn't matter...Are you kidding? This is the best overall line up I've seen yet (I have been going since "Mudfest"). It's a fantastic line up! Carolina Chocolate Drops...Squirrel Nut Zippers...Bluegrass Experience...Chatham County Line. Randy Whit and Grits. Heck they even were able to get Unknown Tongues from Nagshead. It's a change in emphasis. If one wants to provide a venue for Carolina grassroots music, this is it.
This line up fits the overall mission for the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival so well. And I am excited.
