Mark, you have some legitimate comments here, but you lost me when you blamed all the problems on an administration that was only sworn in in December, especially when you went on to talk about all the new developments. Of course some people have legitimate reasons for not paying their taxes, such as financial hardship, but many others don't.
With regards to how much county employees are paid, this is an age old problem in Chatham that has resulted in the loss of a lot of good people. County infirastructure is supported by the tax base. You get what you pay for.

Hi Duncan,
In reply to your request on long trails, there is a pretty good trail at New Hope Overlook State Park area, that will take at least two hours of your time, maybe longer depending on your stride. The site is a public boat launching area, but has a primitive hike in camping area that contains some nice trails.
For a nice casual stroll, the American Tobacco Rail Trail running from Wake County into Chatham County can't be beat. A fine crushed gravel surface along the portion that is currently open, being almost 7 miles. There are 3 different parking lots open now too. The section in Chatham County is currently maintained by the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy, and a good portion of that is open to the public, but there are 3 bridges over Jordan Lake lands that will have to be re-built to connect the entire trail. Once completed, there will be over 24 miles of continuous trail linking Wake, Chatham and Durham Counties!

I agree with most of what you are saying Mark but I have to ask why should having a sticker or not having a sticker effect a rational human's decision whether or not to illegally dump? The stickers are free to tax paying citizens so I don't undertand the argument.

The tax statement that comes in August or September states that the deadline is around the first week of January. One way to avoid getting published in the paper is to start making payments as soon as the bill comes. The tax office is quite willing to work with you on this. I have done this for years, and have yet to be "written up". All the ranting and raving about misuse of tax dollars does not excuse one from paying a bill that is due. One way to alleviate the dissatisfaction with the way your tax money is spent is to move to a county where tax dollars are spent more to your liking.

If you drive around the traffice circle you will notice street signs for WEST Sreet ,EAST Street & HILLSBORO Street, but what about that "seemingly nameless" street that branches south of the circle.
I guess most think of it as HWY 15-501 South. Along with other business owners who have stores located on "Sanford Rd." I find that our new customers have the hardest time finding our location.
Why is there no sign for Sanford Rd.? And what's is the town gov. going to do about it?
I may have to post my own street sign there, and rename it "J. Henry Ave."

There is a 40# long-haired Bernese Mountain dog look-alike meandering around downtown Moncure this week. No collar; shy around people but good with other dogs and accepting of cats. His coat's in not too bad shape for a stray, so maybe he hasn't been gone long.
Anyone know where he might have come from?

I just moved from the Chatham subdivision to Bynum and have officially decided to organize what may turn out to be the first annual Over 40 Women's Weekend Wine Tour, hopefully to take place this spring or early summer to Yadkin Valley. My ideal tour would include transportation (designated driver), tour of 3-4 wineries, dinner, overnight lodging, one or two wineries on Sunday and return trip back to Pittsboro or Chapel Hill area. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in doing, please let me know. I'm starting a collection of email addresses so I can keep people in the loop as plans develop. About me ... I'm in my mid 40's and currently work at the North Carolina Division of Aging & Adult Services as an Adult Day Care Consultant/Aging Program Specialist. I also work part time helping out the Chatham Habitat for Humanity Home Store in Pittsboro. I moved to Carolina in 1987 for graduate school and often say "once you move to the southern part of Heaven, it's hard to leave." I love the outdoors, just bought a good whitewater kayak, and am very community minded. My motto in life is "Something Wonderful Is About to Happen" ... of course a friend recently said I should change that to "Something Wonderful IS Happening!" Hope you'll consider joining the email list for the women's wine tour ... no obligation yet - just collecting emails of interested parties. Shannon Crane Bynum, NC

Hillsborough has been named one of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Chapel Hill News credits the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough. Why reinvent the wheel? I hope Pittsboro will take the opportunity to learn from our friends to the north...
Allen Baddour
From the Chapel Hill News:
*ROSES* to the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, whose fine work in preserving that lovely town's historic past is largely responsible for the National Trust for Historic Preservation's recent designation of Hillsborough as one of its "Dozen Distinctive Destinations."
Mayor Tom Stevens put it perfectly: "We inherited our history," he said. "But it's what we do with our history that counts."
What they've done with their history is manage the delicate balance between preserving the historic character of the town while still allowing it to grow and evolve. That's a tricky dance to pull off, but Hillsborough has managed to do it thus far.
A lot of the credit for that success goes to the Alliance of Historic Hillsborough and its seven member organizations dedicated to various aspects of the town and its history and culture.
The alliance, the town leaders and residents will have their hands full in the coming years. Hillsborough and its surrounding area are poised for enormous growth, with big residential and commercial developments in various stages of planning and construction.
That makes it more difficult than ever -- and more important than ever -- to maintain the town's ties to its important past.

Chatham Transit and Council on Aging to Offer Additional Transportation Services for Senior Citizens The Chatham County Council on Aging and Chatham Transit Network are partnering to offer additional transportation services to senior citizens in Chatham County. New routes are being established in various areas of the County that will offer a ride to Pittsboro or Siler City for shopping, errands and banking. Vans will drive to the outlying areas of Chatham County on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to pick up passengers who pre-register for this service. Most passengers will board the van from their home between 8:30 and 10 am and will arrive at their destination town between 10 and 10:30. The passengers are free to get off at any stop that they choose. There will be scheduled stops at grocery stores and other shops, pharmacies, the post office, banks, the library and restaurants. Riders with special destination needs can make those requests by calling Chatham Transit Network (CTN) in advance. CTN will be able to tell you if they are able to accommodate this special request. Each route will establish scheduled stops and riders will be able to get back on the van when it comes back around on its scheduled stops. Lunch is “on your own” at a local restaurant. Several merchants have offered senior discounts and lunch specials. Coupons or information are available at the Council on Aging, at Chatham Transit Network and on the van. Most passengers will be able to make 1 – 3 stops per day before it is time to head back home. Vans will depart to take their passengers back home between 1:00 and 1:30 pm. Passengers should arrive back at their home destinations between 1:00 and 3:00 pm depending on where they are on the route and how many passengers are on the van. If you or someone you know is in need of transportation to take care of personal business and errands, or for weekly shopping, please call Dianne McLaughlin or Lindsay Straughn at 542-4512 at the Council on Aging or Helen Stovall at 542-5136 at Chatham Transit Network. *The full cost for this round trip service is $8.00, but eligible seniors enrolled in this program may make a contribution of any amount. The suggested donation for seniors is $2.00 per round trip.

Hello all. I’m seeking a daycare for my 2yr old son in Pittsboro or Moncure. I’ve tried Robin’s Nest and they have no openings. Can anyone recommend a good daycare for M-F and 8am-6pm? I really want somewhere local where he can meet kids he might see when he starts school in a few years.
Thanks!
Laura

Chatham Sculptors Make Friends and Art in New Mexico
Jennifer Siegel is modeling a new T-shirt for her fellow Central Carolina Community College sculpture students. It says, "Where friendship flows as hot as iron." Siegel and professor Kevin Eichner have just returned from Tucumcari, New Mexico, where artist friends from across the country enjoyed a weeklong iron pour workshop.
The 2007 Iron Pour at Mesalands Community College drew prominent sculptors from all round including: Alaska, Nevada, Florida, Ohio Michigan and North Carolina to share in an art-making experience from March 4-10. It is the ninth year of the event, and Kevin Eichner has been a critical part of all of them.
Eichner first met the Mesalands Iron Pour organizer, D'Jean Jawrunner when they both were both doing masters work at East Carolina University. In fact, he built the original furnace still in use there. " I go to the pour each year for the love of the iron and the environment." Eichner notes. "It's a primordial experience," he adds. "Over the years, I have made really good friends and seen some amazing work"
Jennifer Siegel says that, "The New Mexico pour was a catalyst for a new direction in art for me." I am overwhelmed with new ideas." Siegel, who will graduate from the CCCC sculpture program in May, recalls, "This was the greatest example of collaboration among professional artists that I have experienced."
The Mesalands Iron Pour participants melted and poured over 5500 pounds of iron, producing a variety of sculptural objects. " I brought back in the plane more that 90 pounds of sculptures to finish in our metal studio in Siler City."
Siegel will exhibit one of the sculptures that she made in New Mexico at Earth Ore Fire, a show of metal, clay, glass & concrete by students, alumni, faculty & colleagues of the CCCC Metal Sculpture Program at NC Arts Incubator, 223 N Chatham St, Siler City March 17-30. Visitors may meet the artists at a reception on Fri, Mar 23, 5-8 pm. Several galleries within walking distance will be open during the reception.
