for the upholstery quest: I've had good experience with Keys Upholstery in Jonesboro/Sanford city limits. They're in the phone book for Sanford. They've been in business probably 50 years minimum, last time I was in they had a 50's jaguar and a horse drawn wagon in the shop along with many others. I'm sure they could handle your requests. Pricy, but competent.   greg jones

Subject: Black belts awarded to Siler City, Liberty students

SILER CITY - Diego Flores of Siler City and Doug Routh of Liberty received black belts and the rank of First Dan Junior when South Eastern Karate held its quarterly promotion testing on Mar. 10.

Certificates and belts were presented by Master Instructor Peggy Jolly, a seventh-degree black belt who has taught martial arts locally for nearly 25 years. Students from four South Eastern Karate schools in the area, along with parents and guests, attended the ceremony.

Flores' mother enrolled her son in karate at a young age. Like other 10-year-olds, he finds it challenging to learn forms - choreographed patterns of kicks and punches used in training - but enjoys most of what he has learned twice a week in class and several times each year for promotion exams. Breaking boards and kicking are particular favorites.

Obviously, Flores has learned the punches and kicks that form the core of martial arts training. He's also learned other lessons that are usually discovered later in life. "To do stuff, you have to have self-confidence," he says. "You have to believe in yourself."

Routh, 10, began taking karate to develop a stronger sense of self-discipline and leadership, and it seems to have worked out as planned. Though it was hard to get up in front of the class at first, Routh says, he has overcome that initial sense of embarrassment and now is much more confident in his ability to perform under pressure and lead others.

That newfound confidence also is obvious in his kicks, which are a hallmark of tae kwon do, the Korean martial art he studies. The new black belt says he enjoys practicing sweeping, jump sweeping and jump back kicks, some of the more difficult varieties for young students to master.

The two black belts awarded this month are the most recent among many presented in the 25-year history of South Eastern Karate.

Founded in 1982, the school plans to mark its silver anniversary on May 5 with an afternoon open house for junior students and the community, followed by an evening reunion for actively training adult students and invited guests.

The reunion, Jolly says, will feature International Grandmaster Young Taek Yu of Young Yu Tae Kwon Do in Greensboro, who helped establish the school.

Both events will be held at the flagship building in Siler City.

South Eastern Karate, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in May, teaches Korean martial arts to adults and children, men and women, at schools in Siler City, Pittsboro, Liberty and Sanford. Students range from 5-year-old white belts, or beginners, to new students and high-ranking black belts of retirement age. The schools' instruction in self-defense also emphasizes confidence, physical fitness and self-discipline.
