March 21, 2007: No-till Vegetable Production Conference
The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension presents a No-till Vegetable Production Conference from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Agricultural Building Auditorium in Pittsboro, NC. Reap the benefits of several years of research in the North Carolina Piedmont on no-till vegetable production systems. Learn how no-till systems can improve soil quality and improve crop yields. No-till expert Dr. Ron Morse from Virginia Tech will share his many years of experience refining his system of using high-residue cover crops in no-till organic vegetable production systems.
Dr. Morse has also developed a no-till planter appropriate for small farms that he will bring for display. NC A&T State University Specialists and farmer Alex Hitt will discuss the soil quality benefits of no-till systems and how farmers can design the best system for their farm.

The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer a workshop on Grafting Heirloom Tomatoes for Disease Control and Improved Yields as part of its Enhancing Sustainability Series from 12:45-5:00 p.m.
at the Agricultural Building Auditorium in Pittsboro, NC.
Grafting vegetables to manage soilborne diseases is a common practice in commercial greenhouses in many other parts of the world and is only recently receiving attention here in the U.S. Grafted tomato transplants are able to combine the high quality fruit of heirloom cultivars with the disease resistance, stress tolerance, and vigor of modern rootstock cultivars.
This workshop will focus on the work of North Carolina State University's Dr. Frank Louws and his graduate student Cary Rivard, now conducting his PhD research on tomato grafting. Cary has done on-farm research on several local farms. Come learn about this exciting new area of applied research.

Subject: Farm Photos on Web: Celebrity Dairy Open Barn
It’s kidding season at Celebrity Dairy, which means owners Brit and Fleming Pfann throw open their doors and invite the public to visit. The first 2007 “Open Barn” weekend was February 10-11, and it was a fun-filled weekend with hundreds of happy visitors. I posted photos on the Growing Small Farms website at http://chatham.ces.ncsu.edu/growingsmallfarms/farmphoto.html - click on the first link. You’ll also see links to view photos of cheesemaking and also of a goat birth (not on the same page!!).
If you didn’t make it out last month and wish you had, then don’t fret because they are having another Open Barn THIS weekend, March 10-11, 2007 from 1:00-5:00 pm. Visit Celebrity Dairy’s website at http://www.celebritydairy.com/ for directions. The Open Barn is loads of fun and a great way to learn more about local agriculture. I’m teaching at the Organic Growers’ School in the mountains on Saturday but plan to be there Sunday. I hope to see you there!

"Christ in the Passover" slated for March 22
SILER CITY -- Though Christians participate in communion regularly, remembering Christ's gathering with the disciples before his death, many may not understand its roots or have considered its meaning.
"Christ in the Passover," scheduled for March 22 at Rocky River Baptist Church in Siler City, brings that night in the "upper room"
alive.
The hour-long program is cosponsored by Jews for Jesus, an international Christian ministry of Jewish believers who proclaim Jesus as the Messiah. It begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
In a visual demonstration, Rahel Landrum will explain the link between the ancient Festival of Redemption and Christ as the Lamb of God.
Using a table set with traditional Passover items, she will walk through the Jewish Passover ceremonial feast, weaving the story of Exodus together with the life, death and resurrection of Christ -- much like Jesus shared the Passover meal with the disciples shortly before his death.
The presentation concludes with communion. There is no charge for admission; a love offering for the Jews for Jesus ministry will be accepted.
Landrum, who will lead the program, was born in Romania and moved to Israel when she was 12 years old. Before serving in the Israeli army, she took a short Bible course and became convinced that Jesus' claim to be the Messiah was true.
She holds a B.A. in English from Haifa University in Israel and an M.A. in Jewish Missions from Fuller Theological Seminary in California.

Subject: Project Graduation Committees Meet
Since 1990, Project Graduation has been an annual event for graduating seniors from all three high schools. Seniors and their guests enjoy a fun-filled evening with music, games and plenty of food in a safe graduation celebration that is alcohol and drug free. ³It is our communities¹ way of sending a clear message to our children that alcohol and other drug use does not have to be a part of their lives,² said Elizabeth Vickrey, co-chair of the Chatham Coalition for Alcohol and Drug Free Youth.
³The success of the event relies solely on the parents who come every year and help us prepare for and supervise the evening,² added George Greger-Holt, Student Assistance/Safe Schools Counselor with the school system and the other co-chair of CCADFrY. ³Without parent and community support, Project Graduation would not take place,² he continued.
Each year, the committee raises money from local businesses, houses of worship and individuals so seniors can enjoy a night to remember. ³With the communities¹ help, we hope to give away exciting door prizes, including a $2,000 grand prize to a senior from each high school at the end of the night,² said Vickrey. ³It truly is a community effort.²
This year, the countywide event will be held at Northwood High School in Pittsboro from 11:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9 to 6:00 a.m. Sunday, June 10. Students are encouraged to stay all night and must be present to win a prize.
Several meetings are planned across the county to involve parents in everything from fundraising to chaperoning to decorating and serving food. The meetings will be held at Jordan-Matthews High School on Monday, March 19 at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium, Northwood High School on Tuesday, March 20 at 7:00 pm in the Media Center and at Chatham Central High School on Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium. Parents should be on the lookout for more information in their mailboxes.
³We invite everyone in the community to come and be a part of this event,² said Vickrey. ³It¹s a great way to honor our graduates and help them see that the community supports alcohol and drug free youth.²

Subject: New Spay Day Hopes to Save Pets
Two Veterinarians in Chatham County and one in Cary will be taking part in a Chatham County Low Cost Spay and Neuter Day -USA- on Wednesday, March 21st to battle the growing tragedy of companion animal euthanasia.
“The number of unwanted animals is too high,” said Dr. Laurie Weiser of Pittsboro Animal Hospital. Weiser, who began practicing in Pittsboro last summer, added, “There are many health benefits to spaying or neutering your pet, but by far the need to control the population of dogs and cats is the goal of this program.” Almost 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year. Experts say fixing the pet population would greatly reduce the number of euthanized pets.
The low-cost services will be performed at Pittsboro Animal Hospital in Pittsboro - 542-5712, Tysor Veterinary Clinic in Siler City - 742-3646, and PetSound Animal Hospital in Cary - 851-4114 and participants must schedule drop- off and pick -up for that day by Tuesday, March 20.

Greetings Chat-listers,
Thanks to those of you who have signed up for the upcoming Chatham Parenting Now! course. I just need a few more families to fill up the Monday night North Chatham School class!
So, come on, North Chatham residents, give it a try! Parents so far really enjoy the class!
I may postpone the class one week to be sure we have a fun, filled class so call ASAP to reserve your space 919-423-7217. (the recent ads had a typo in the phone number! MY BAD!)
Chatham Parenting Now! is a free, 7 week Parent Education course open to all Chatham families with children ages birth - 5 years in the home (even if you have older one's too!).
Some questions I've received...
What are some of the topics of the classes? We talk about all the important stressors parents of young children face like, parenting with your values, limit setting, tantrums, and managing parenting stress.
What time do you meet? We have a family dinner at 6 pm and classes start around 6:30 and finish around 8 pm. (got to get those little ones in bed! Speaking of bedtime, that's a popular topic for group discussion also!)
Do I have to attend all 7 sessions? Yes, if possible. Though we understand that little one's get sick and you might have to miss one session, we hope you will commit to attending all 7 sessions. It is a commitment and we realize that. However, research has proven that learning is more effective if you attend repeated sessions. (How many of you have read a parenting book, only to realize a few days later that you don't remember what you read? It takes reading, talking and practicing to really learn new parenting tricks!) Parents usually say they don't want the class to stop, so the class goes by more quickly than you think!
Tell me more about you! I am a counselor with over 16 years experience working with children and parents. More importantly, I am a parent, with 2 boys, one of which is 3 years old. So sometimes, I'm the one needing the support, too! We all will learn together. Some participants need more support. Some parents are able to help the parents who need more information, but everyone has said that they learned something!
I hope you will pass this information along to families you know with young children. These classes only come around 4 times a year and have a limited class size, so take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to grow and learn as a parent! Contact Evette for more information!

I've got two cushions I need covered with marine vinyl. I've got the cushions and the vinyl and I'd do it myself except I want the nice cording along the edges and I'm pretty sure I can't pull that off without the heavy duty sewing equipment.
