Reminder about Classified posts

This is a friendly reminder (again) that no matter when you send in a classified post it will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist. Please do NOT email me asking where your classified post is. It will not appear until the Friday Chatlist. If you send in your classified post on Friday AFTER the classified chatlist has already gone out, guess what? You classified post will NOT appear until the FOLLOWING Friday's Classified Chatlist.

If you get an automated receipt after you send in your post that means we HAVE received your post. Regular emails are posted within 24 to 48 hours. Of course, classified posts will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist.

The Friday Classifieds are very popular and it's not unusual to have over 30 to 40 items on the list. Do NOT email me about a missing post unless you have double checked the chatlist again.

The general rule of thumb is that you can post the same service or the same items twice in a row or twice in a month.
Please adhere to this rule. It also helps a lot if you use some descriptive text in your heading besides FOR SALE ie used TV for sale, yardwork services, Queen-Size Bed and lots of other household stuff

Last item! Please remember that the Classified Chatlist is a FREE and popular community service. Neighbors like dealing with neighbors and it's nice to buy stuff or services from folks you "know". Following certain guidelines makes it a better experience for us all.

Subject: Fwd: Track at Northwood

Ms. DiFranco,

Both my daughters ran track at Jordan-Matthews and I have argued for new tracks since my oldest was a freshman (she is now a senior at UNC).  All three high schools have tracks that are pretty much in the same condition and none can host conference meets.  No other schools in either conference still have asphalt tracks and they aren't used in conference meets because they lead to more injuries to runners.
New tracks have been in our long-range plan since my first year on the board.

New rubberized surface tracks are in our budget request for the coming year.  They were in the original bond request presented to the Board of Commissioners (before past Commissioners decided to fund Virginia Cross Elementary, the new northeast middle school, and the additions at JM through Certificates of Participation).  After those projects were funded with COPs, the Board of Education was told that a bond request could only be for the amount of the proposed new high school because that was all the county could afford to borrow with the current revenue stream.  It appears the current BOC will also fund the new high school with COPS (they haven't officially voted yet).  While that is a very good thing for the new high school, it doesn't provide any funding for the tracks.  That leaves us having to fund the new tracks through our capital outlay budget.  The proposed budget can be found on the Chatham County Schools website and the track requests are on page 12.  We do not yet have the funding for these projects but we are hoping to fund new tracks at each high school with our anticipated lottery proceeds.

I appreciate your concerns and I am in complete agreement with you.
Our students deserve to have decent tracks and they should not be expected to practice on old asphalt tracks then compete on a very different surface and our schools should be able to host competitive events.  They deserve new tracks and we hope to make that happen this year.  As for the rest of the track and field competition equipment (starting blocks, vaults, hurdles, etc.), they are funded by each individual school's athletic department so that might be an issue to discuss with your athletic director or booster club.

Thank you for your email.  Parent input is very important to us.  I feel confident that this will be the year we will finally get new tracks but it won't be until summer so please be patient with us one more track season.

In response to Chris Gandy's inquiry, I highly recommend Pete Richardson, owner of Wasp Automotive in RTP. (Called "Wasp" automotive because of Pete's love of the old Hudson Hornets and Wasps.) Pete and his crew are authorized to do maintenance and repairs on Subaru, Mazda, Toyota, and Honda. The phone number is (919) 286-9277. (It's especially handy if you work in Chapel Hill, because Pete has a drop site at Joseph's Hairstyling on Airport Road.)

Anyone know how to contact Jack Armstrong (or where he may be) (not his brother, John), who lives on Pea Ridge Road near the plant?  I have had his dog Duke (white husky lab mix) at my house for a few days.  I've left a message on what may be his phone number and tried to find where Jack may live, but without a car in the driveway, most of the mobile homes on Pea Ridge look a lot alike.  Duke's a nice dog but he eats a lot and it's not like Jack to leave him.

Hey Mark,
Thanks for your post and suggestion to contact Ann Hart. I do think that an explanation about school violence policy would be appreciated by many since it seems that policy as written is not being followed.
If we were evaluating policy about talking in class or gum chewing or cell phone use at school this would be different. When I hear stories on the news about violence in school settings I can't help but think that it can happen anywhere. Including but not limited to the classroom that my children attend. I'd like to think that proactive measures is something we can all invest in.

                                     Steve Candelori

------------------------------------
Steve,

My point is that the policy is in place and is being followed.  You are asking for an "explanation" "since it seems that policy as written is not being followed", right?  The only person who can explain the policy on a case by case basis is Dr. Hart since the policy states that only the Super. can overrule the principal's decision.  The BoE takes input from the community, analyzes the data and implements policy change when necessary.

Too fine a point on it?  Maybe.  But it is clear to me that many people in the community, not necessarily you, do not have a complete understanding of the limited power that the BoE has and therefore form opinions based not on facts but on how it "ought" to be if they were on the BoE.

Here is the policy regarding safety (notice - Violation of this section MAY result in long-term suspension, 365 days suspension or expulsion.): http://policy.chatham.k12.nc.us/mediawiki/index.php/Policy_4333N - This policy says that 365 day expulsion MAY occur... not will occur.  Again it is up to the Super. to make the call.

Some interesting reading on our school board and the limits of their power:

They are a full service auto repair facility and have been in business for over 40 years. They offer an unheard of 2 year/24,000 mile warranty on most repairs. Give them a call .at. 742-5991. You know, I have to tell all of you people that replied to Robin's question about the taxes on disposal fee was very impressive especially since most everyone stated that they were not a "tax guy". With that being said, maybe someone could shed some light on what the Hope credit and Lifetime credit is?
This is my daughters first year in college and I'm not sure what I can and cannot deduct. We have a computer we had to buy, books, lab fees and of course those lovely loans to pay back. I read the information a couple of times and still wasn't sure. Any suggestions?

Subject: Timber Marketing and Financial Incentives for Forestry Management Workshop -- Thursday -- March 15 -- 7:00 pm -- Pittsboro

Timber Marketing and Financial Incentives Workshop --- Thursday --- March 15, 2007

----- By Glenn Woolard, County Extension Director

A timber marketing and financial incentives workshop will be held on Thursday, March 15, at 7:00 pm.  It will be held in the auditorium downstairs in the County Agriculture Building in Pittsboro. The workshop is being conducted by the Chatham County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and Extension Forestry at North Carolina State University.  The Chatham Extension Center is the Chatham County campus of North Carolina State University.

The workshop will have two parts.  Part one will be on timber marketing.
Part two will be on financial incentives for forest management.  Each part will last about 45 minutes. Dr. Robert Bardon, Extension Forestry Specialist, at North Carolina State University; will give the presentations.

Part One --- When and how a landowner sells timber can greatly influence how much money they can make, their overall financial plans, cost of regeneration and other management objectives. A landowner would never sell bonds before they mature or sell stocks when the market is down. Years of growth and value are accumulated in a mature timber stand. The accumulated annual income from all those years is frequently marketed in a single transaction. Too much is at stake to sell timber without an understanding of the markets and of the quality and quantity of timber. Size, quality, and species of timber are highly variable. Specialized knowledge is required to identify tree species and to estimate volume and value within utilization standards accepted by local markets.  There are no daily market price reports for standing timber (stumpage), nor are there any government support prices. Both demand and price for many timber products fluctuate widely. Add to this the fact that many timber sales are once- or twice-in-a-lifetime occurrences. Learning from experience can be very expensive!  This program will address marketing and selling timber, timber sale agreements and seeking professional advice from a consulting forester.  By participating in the program landowners can make their next (or first) timber sale both a pleasant and a profitable experience.

Part Two --- Forest management is an excellent long-term investment. Over the years, income from managed timber stands has exceeded that from most other crops in terms of value added per acre per year. Even managed pre-merchantable timber stands have increased the property value of forestland substantially over bare or unmanaged, cutover woodland. Annual returns from 0 to 40 percent are possible from forest management. The range of returns is wide because of variations in soil productivity, stand condition, tree species, markets (both availability and price fluctuations), intensity of management, and availability of financial incentives.  By participating in the program participants will learn about the federal and state government programs for woodland owners.  Several of these programs offer cost-sharing payments that reimburse landowners for timber management activities.

The registration fee is $5.00. This includes the workshop materials, advertising, and refreshments.  Participants may pay in advance or at the door.  Please call Cooperative Extension at (919) 542-8202 to pre-register.
This will insure that we have enough refreshments and workshop materials.
Make checks payable to: Chatham County Cooperative Extension.  Mail to:
Cooperative Extension, PO Box 279, Pittsboro, NC 27312-0279.

You can also register at the Chatham County Extension Center at the County Agriculture Building in Pittsboro.  Office hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to
5 p.m.

For more details, call Glenn Woolard, County Extension Director, at (919) 542-8202, email to glenn_woolard.at.ncsu.edu or visit our web site at http://chatham.ces.ncsu.edu/

Subject: Beautiful Chocolate Lab

Hello All:

Today (Saturday) I saw a lost chocolate lab wandering bewildered in Siler City at the Roses/McDonalds strip mall.  I gave him a cheeseburger and he/she (forgot to check) was gentle enough to be hand-fed.  He/she had a worn blue collar with a rabies tag.  He/she is quite underweight.  I left a phone message for animal control.  I was unable to take this sweet dog because I had my large bullmastiff with me and my son in his car seat.  My car is small and I was worried to take the chance of how this dog would do with my dog in the car.  I hope and pray that this dog finds their home because he or she was certainly a good-natured dog.

  All the best,

Linda
