I hope my opinions don't come back and bite me on the bum.
I have had the pleasure of being a resident of Chatham County for 5 years this February and now the owner of a small business in Pittsboro for a little over a year. I am definitely proud to say I live here and I encourage people to come visit. Pittsboro is one of the sweetest towns I have ever been to. It's charming, pretty and inviting. I love the fact that when my daughter and I walk into the General Store Cafe that patrons say hello to us. I also love that when I walk to the bank I see at least 3 people I know and we stop and chat for a minute. I love the cultural and artistic diversity in Chatham County. Pittsboro is a wonderful display of our counties finest artists. Just walk anywhere downtown and chances are you will either wander into one of our beautiful art galleries or even better run into one of our many artists. Being a local artist myself, Pittsboro, and all that it has to offer inspires me to create. Therefore, I would like for any growth and change in Pittsboro to match our community's needs. We are a huge art community, having an after school art program that encourages our young budding artists to use their creative energies. Whatever the desire they have artistically, wouldn't it be great if we could offer that here in Pittsboro. An after school art school that offers, Music, Dance, Painting, Sculpture, Jewelry Making, Glass Blowing, Pottery and more.
I think change can be good as long as the result benefits the whole. Our community is strong. The people who live here and work here and do their business here is what gives our town its strength. For example: I love being a small town business owner, the camaraderie alone is comforting. When I first opened my store in December 2005 other shop owners came to me and introduced themselves and welcomed me to Pittsboro. You wouldn't get that in a big city with a more competitive market. I welcome and encourage other small business owners to come to Pittsboro to start a life and business in our town. What I don't care to see are strip malls and "big brother" shopping centers with Super this and that stores that run business's like mine and all the other small business downtown out of business. I like the fact that I have to drive 20 minutes or so to get to Target in Apex, it gives me an opportunity to listen to my music uninterrupted. I also like the drive back knowing that my town is, well just what it is, my small town. I believe that parks, neighborhoods and schools should have trees. I don't see the point in cutting a plot of land when you don't have to. There are plenty of vacant buildings close to town and downtown that could be turned into avenues that better our community on a whole. For instance, the Chatham Marketplace was an excellent concept and they found a fantastic place to put it. The old Chatham Mill, what a great place to grow new business in our town. A change I would like to see would be sidewalks to Chatham Marketplace. I also like that Raleigh is adopting the idea of making the whole city lit with LED lights, it saves on energy as a whole and brings about a brighter and safer environment. Imagine a sidewalk from downtown to the Chatham Marketplace and along the sidewalk have street lamps with LED lights. This leads me to the Main Streets program.
I encourage the idea of the Main Streets program as long as there are no hidden agendas it sounds like it would be a fantastic way to give Pittsboro a facelift without major reconstructive surgery. I feel as though this program could help our town in many positive ways including paying proper tribute with a "Museum of Pittsboro". The Mill, in my opinion, would make a great place to put a museum. I am also in favor of an 'old town' movie theatre, like the one in Chapel Hill (I envision this being at the old ford dealership). How cool would it be to have our very own theatre??? Dinner and a movie in Pittsboro that would be huge! What would be even better is a sidewalk connecting the two. Fine dining? Absolutely! I think we are ready for white linen and delicate southern cuisine with more than one fork. Liquor? I don't care. I could take it or leave it I guess. I would like to offer a request though, that if a Pittsboro restaurant starts to sell liquor can you please carry Knob Creek? Thank you.
The appeal to me of Pittsboro is that it just is what it is and everything is 'all right' here. It soothes me to know that my husband and I are raising our daughter in a town where people care about other people and it just works for us here. Pittsboro is the kind of place I always envisioned that I would raise a child and that vision is fortunately a reality. Even with inevitable change I can imagine that I will forever, no matter where I am in this world call Pittsboro home.

In response to Peter Neenan, I recommend Joe Suprick (Northern Lights Electric Co., Pittsboro, tel. 542-6057), who has been Chatham Habitat's very capable electrician for many years.

Recently my family bought a dishwasher from Lowes Home Improvement. I noticed on my receipt that I was charged a disposal fee of $3.00. Although this was not a big charge or anything I had never heard of it, so I called the store manager and asked him what it was and was told that the state of North Carolina charges a disposal fee on all new appliances that are purchased. I told him I had no dishwasher to dispose of that I am currently replacing and he said it didn't matter. Why Not??? That is ridiculous that I should be charged this fee if I have no appliance to dispose of. Can someone tell me why I have no choice? I would definitely understand if I was taking an old one to the landfill or something, The second item I would like to mention is last month I received a tax paper for a NC State refund from 2005 that I have to claim when I do taxes. So I will be paying tax on my refund? Is this not called double taxing? I am confused about this issue also, maybe someone will have an answer to that one.

I was at the school board meeting Monday night and before the meeting started I asked a few questions to Norman Clark and Paul Joyce. Question 1, Do we have $75,000 for Northwoods track? Answer: NO..It was priority #3 Jan. 31, 2006 in the capital outlay requested from Mr. County. It was not approved. Now it is once again in the capital outlay for all three high schools getting a new track with $225,000. Now we wait for money from the lottery to go to that. Their is no real answer when or if the tracks will be repaired. I also asked that a policy be put in place to where if such occurrence as weapons or any other type of threat or harm is at the schools then a letter within 48 hours should be sent home to the parents whose children attend these schools, regardless of age, like no information when the middle school incident occurred but younger grades knew about it and parents were concerned with NO information sent home. A letter was finally sent home MON> feb. 26th. Too little too late.
Could someone suggest a good person to install an outside step (brick) railing? Thanks, Salinda

Hi Steve,
Is there some reason the policies as written need explaining? It is pretty clear to me that the buck stops with the Superintendant. The Super can over-rule any principal if they choose. Why not ask Ann Hart about her specific rulings since the BoE has no power in this regard?
Thanks Duncan, for such an energetic response about 4-H! I too grew up in the 4-H program and had many of the same experiences that you described. One of the most important skills that I learned was public speaking. I love the fact that now I get to work for such a great organization that has given so much to me. You are correct that 4-H'ers do things and Chatham County 4-H'ers are definitely doing things. I know I've said it over and over again, but we would love to have more 4-H'ers doing great things. If you are interested, just give our office a call at 919-542-8202. Thanks again Duncan for sharing your memories with us. Together we can have more youth "making the best better" and participating in activities where they "learn by doing!"
I want to chime in about 4-H. My participation in 4-H, from elementary school age into college, quite literally changed my life, and also brought my family closer together. My sister was just as involved, and both my parents were leaders. I had dozens of projects and, as a suburban kid, not a single animal except for our dog. However, I learned an enormous amount about agriculture, livestock breeds and characteristics (through judging programs), and rural life because most of my friends were fellow 4-H'ers who lived on farms. 4- H gave me the opportunity to travel the country, and for some of my friends, the world. I also learned about photography and, most importantly for me now, writing. 4-H is an unusual organization in that the members are held responsible for directing their projects and clubs; I know this fostered independence in me.
I've always loved that the very first line of the 4-H pledge is, "I pledge my head to clearer thinking." We desperately need people -- including children -- who can think clearly about this county, the challenges facing agriculture and rural America, and what we can do to get past our squabbles and do something constructive and tangible. If there's one thing about 4-H that makes it unique, it's this: 4- H'ers _do_ things. They make things, they raise things, they create things, they fix things. A 4-H slogan I remember is Learn By Doing; the 4-H'ers I knew were the type of people who got things done, whether it was setting up a horse show or cleaning streams.

I need to use this public forum to apologize and eat some crow.
First, I would like to apologize to all who attended the BOE meeting at Horton Monday night, but in particular to the woman from N.Chatham who I openly chastised for doing the same thing I did for years...getting involved and asking question of the school system. I was rude and my comments were out of line. I am sorry. My son was with me and admonished me for my behavior on the way home. I guess I showed him, by example, how not to behave at a public meeting.
Second, it appears I was wrong about the money for the track at Northwood being in the budget last year. It was IN the budget, but never funded. It was supposed to be paid for by lottery money that didn't arrive until recently. It is now on schedule for ALL the high schools to get the new rubberized track. So, this ONE is not Paul Joyce's fault. Although the fact that the track was allowed to get to this condition in the first place, certainly falls in his domain. (ok, i'm not willing to eat that much crow)
Meg
