Thanks, Chatham Listers, for the calls and emails in response to my post about firewood. I have heard from folks from Sno Camp to Silk Hope to Holly Springs! That's a lot of territory. I'm in the process of calling and emailing everyone who has responded. If you haven't heard back from me yet, don't despair -- you will shortly. I checked out a couple of sources today, at the north end of our fair county. One major side benefit to the never ending quest for firewood -- I saw lots of beautiful back road scenery and met some wonderful people. I pity you poor, deprived sods with one-touch central heat ... you don't know what you are missing!
We do have some of the most marvelous and gracious people here in Chatham -- salt of the earth, if you take my meaning. It warms the heart (and hopefully the home, come next winter) to hear from you all. Looking forward to meeting every one of you -- Jackie Strouble

I agreed with both of Dan Cahoon's excellent posts this morning. I had thought of putting out a trash can too to give litterers a focal point. I will continue to attempt to keep my place clean - a quarter mile of trash is not easy to pick up for an old lady ; ) - but his point is well taken - if it's kept clean, maybe people won't think of littering on that particular spot.
The other comment I have is about violence in the schools. When ever that subject comes up I think of the time I was called at work to say my daughter - then 12 - had been injured at school. A boy had shoved a basket ball in her face with such force that her glasses cut a circle around her eye. When I asked her if he did it on purpose, she naively said, "Who would do a thing like that on purpose?". I went to the principal and he brushed me off, saying the boy was a "good kid". Three years later I read in the paper that the boy had been charged with raping someone. If only I'd been more assertive at the time, perhaps there would have been a happier ending both for the rape victim and the boy.

Sue
The money is there to replace the track at Northwood, it's in the budget (the old budget). The problem can be summed up, imo, with two words; PAUL JOYCE.
There is a BOE meeting at Horton Monday at 7:30. If you really want to get the answer, which involves using the correct material to resurface the track and Mr. Joyce's inability to get anything done right or in a timely fashion when it comes to his job as Superintendent of Facilities, I would suggest attending that meeting, sign up to speak and get it straight from the horse's mouth.
Meg
And before anyone gets all defensive about my attack on Mr. Joyce. This is not about his person, it's about JOB PERFORMANCE. He is a nice guy, I actually like him but he is the reason (or the only remaining reason) some of our schools are in the shape they are in. By not doing his job over the years, he has cost the county untold money(leaking roofs) and been responsible for putting our students at risk. I know this first hand, I have two of the children that were injured (broken arm/ stitches) at PHS because we couldn't get erosion problems fixed (years) or mulch put on the playground. It took a TA falling down the erosion bank and breaking an arm to get his attention.
The list is endless (I have one). Why is this still going on? Ask the BOE that one too Sue. I've heard the answers, I'd just like to hear them in a public forum.

Vana, Linda listed no less than 10 options for you to try. I really hope that you will not put your old dogs down because it is more convenient than checking out these alternatives. Without "chastising" you, I beg of you to take the extra time it will require to find your friends a new place to live out their lives. The fact that you "...don't hold out much hope" sounds ominous, given the numerous options you now have.

I am teaching conflict resolution in fourth grade classes at Siler City Elementary and 9th grade classes at Jordan Matthews H.S. The classes are offered through Deep River Mediation. I would recommend that other schools take advantage of this service. I believe that if young people are taught to deal with their feelings and learn to resolve conflicts in a healthy way there would be a lot less violence.

Thank you. I live just one mile from the Harnett County line and have saved up the money to be connected to Chatham County Water.
I for one don't care where it comes from as long as it is good water. A neighbor of ours is a Chicken farmer with 6 chicken houses and he truly needs the water. He has offered to buy a neighbors well. No such luck.
Mike Cross and Patrick Barnes are the only Commissioner's who care about us. I for one plan on never voting for anyone connected with the Coalition. They seem to have their own agenda and don't care who likes or dislikes it!
How much money is it going to cost us the taxpayer's for an attorney to look over this contract? If nothing is found wrong with the contract will these Commissioners pay the county attorney his fees for researching the contract that had been checked by the past attorney? They should be held accountable!
I think there are more important matters the county that need attention without trying to discredit one of the finest things the past board of Commissioners have ever done! This whole process is a waste of taxpayers time and man hours!

Thanks, Dr. Dykers for such kind words about 4-H. Dr. Dykers is correct, there are many interesting groups.4-H is cows, cooking and so much more! In 4-H we have youth working with projects ranging from robotics and electricity to livestock and dogs and everything in between! 4-H is for EVERYONE! If you choose to participate in competitive events, the competition can be intense, but it is fun. You go to competitive events looking to see old friends, not necessarily to bring home the gold medal and the importance of doing the best you can do is stressed. If competitive events aren't for you, that's fine. We have many opportunities to build life skills and friends that don't focus on competition. I hope you will give the 4-H office at call to see how 4-H can be of benefit to your family! For more information the 4-H program in Chatham County, please contact Sarah Kotzian, Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development at sarah_kotzian.ncsu.edu or at 542-8202.

Great Idea.
For a great program. I would like to encourage all the Chatlisters with children or grandchildren or great-grandchildren to contact Sarah and find the 4-H slot that fits them best. There are many interesting groups, and you don't have to be a farmer to be in 4-H
The programs are grounded in a reality that is missing in many other youth activities. The competition is intense but much more friendly and more cooperative than many activities, or at least it used to be. Maybe Sarah would like to comment on that aspect.

The current proposal for a land transfer tax isn't in my view the best approach, because I'd rather see it applied only to new construction. That way it would be a one time tax that would not drive up housing costs over time.
This tax offered by the "tax-and-spend Left" may not be the best solution, but it sure beats the CUT and BORROW policies of the RIGHT that are quite literally bankrupting the country!
Infrastructure and services are not free. In the end, someone has to pay for them, if not through taxes, then through user fees.

It's refreshing for me to read the comments made by Dan Cahoon regarding school violence. I especially appreciate his comments, they coming from a teacher. However, I wonder if that would make any difference when deciding what to do in the unfortunate situation of school violence. I don't want to speak for the masses but I would like to hear from a school board member what the policy is when a student intends and pre-meditates to harm another with or without a weapon. Regardless if the said weapon cuts, burns, bludgeons or fires a projectile. Now, I know that if not all school board members are chat participators then at least one is. And I know that this topic hasn't gotten the response that stray dog posts get but there has been concerning interest that warrants a return post from the school board. So far there has been nothing coming from their camp. Some sort of response would be appreciated, we're concerned for our children's safety. We have here in the chatlist a vehicle in which a response can be expressed. Or perhaps in another similar forum or perhaps not at all. Whether it's here or there or not at all the message will be loud and clear. Understood? I ask of the chatlist community to not let this un-neutered dog run free. Insist that the school board give us answers.

An Opportunity
Blame can't be placed on the new county administration and some problems are not their business but what an opportunity to be problem solvers. Chatlist # 2759 is full of items ; trash on the roadways, school violence, the track at Northwood...a sign that the whole place looks like it's been through a war, water pipelines need to be an issue, the town manager....GASP! That's the short list coming from one day of input. I'm agreeing with Susan ...the school situation is nothing short of being embarrassing. I don't believe in conspiracy theories but it seems that a positive educational experience is important to students and parents alike. If Chatham County can't provide that benefit then this county is not going to grow..satisfying who. Dare I say it? There may be a reason for foot dragging when it comes to building a new school. Outside of the fact that the proposed high school site is inappropriate there are no options on the table. In the mean time what we have looks more like a prison than a school. I would like to see the money that our commissioners want to spend on a lobbyist so we can raise our own taxes go towards fixing the running track at Northwood. Add that to the list above.
