DIY Filter Changes Change your furnace filter(s) at least once every three months. It's best to check them monthly and replace them sooner if they look dirty. Clean filters improve the efficiency of your unit and improve the air quality in your home. Some homes have filters in the return air vents, treat them the same.
If you have air supply vents in your floors, lift the vent and gently vacuum the duct where it turns up.(this is best done with the airflow turned off) Often debris collects in this area. Some drops through the vent, and some gets left behind from initial construction. (You may be surprised what you find!)
As always, Freedom Handyman Service is available to do these items for you if you'd like. www.FreedomHandymanService.com

We would like to place a beautiful, friendly, tortoise-shell female cat to a loving family. She showed up several months ago and adopted us. Though we would love to keep her, our cat has not accepted her. She is incredibly affectionate (would be great with children) and a good mouser. She is litter trained (from her past) and may well have had her shots and been spayed. In Pittsboro. Call 919-389-0651

-------------------- 12 -------------------- Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2007 14:52:46 -0500 From: vana <vprewitt-at-mindspring.com> Subject: Free guard dogs
Hi all,
I'm moving to New Orleans and will be living in a very different environement without land. My 2 dogs have been awesome guard dogs and I want to see if I can find new families for them.
The good news: they are both outdoor dogs, current on shots and medical care, dearly loved but not spoiled. They are trained to an electronic fence.
The not-so-good news: they are both 10 years old.
Kizmet:
She is a spayed mixed lab-mutt who was dumped in our neighborhood as a pup. We kept her as a companion to our Australian Shepherd and they are best buddies. She is getting cranky with him these days so it wouldn't be so bad to separate them. He used to play real rough with her and injured her leg a couple of times. The last time was real bad and we had Dr Corey fix her up. She is as good as new but she does have some arthritis. We buy dog food with glucosomine in it and it really helps.
She barks at strangers and can look kinda mean (she has a really weird facial twitch when she gets excited) but she is a real wuss and very loving. She would be great with kids and can adapt to other pets well.
Kodak:
Neutered Australian Shepherd, born the night of Hurricane Katrina. I think it altered his personality because he is afraid of everything. He learned early on that his size and his bark would make scary things go away so he learned to use that. He is a herd dog so when scared will nip at people. He is very eager to please anyone he considers part of his pack and could be trained not to be aggressive to strangers. He was very responsive to training that brought him back to me immediately across our 8 acres. He needs to know you are the alpha dog.
Both dogs are as sweet as possible with us but have never been around other people much and so don't really know how to handle strangers. Our dog sitter has mastered both of them and I'm convinced the right family would love them too. I know this is a stretch, but I have to try. The alternative is to put them down and this will break our hearts.
Please call or write if you or someone else is willing to try.
Vana

-------------------- 19 -------------------- Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 10:36:25 -0500 From: "Pets To Posies" <jan-at-petstoposies.com> Subject: High Speed Internet - Blast, etc.
I agree that it would be best to have a local company like Blast to provide us with high speed internet out here in the boonies & I think a meeting to discuss it would be very helpful.
A few years ago, we called a local number from someone wanting to put up towers so that we could have hsi but, frankly, the way it was presented did not seem fair to me. We were being asked to provide a very high fee to get the towers up & running then pay a monthly fee for the service. That's all well & good but it seemed that anyone hooking up after the towers were in place would not be required to share in the cost of the towers and that the "pioneers" would not recoup any of the cost of installing the towers in the first place. Sort of asking us to pay for the priviledge of being first.
I do understand that funding is needed to get towers put up and to get the whole thing off the ground, but it seems to me that there ought to be an equitable way to do it. A co-op may be the answer and I would definitely be willing to meet to discuss any solutions that may be available.
Perhaps Blast could organize a meeting of interested parties since they are the obvious choice to provide this service. They would need to let us know the minimum households they need to sign up for the service in a prescribed area. How far will the signal from each tower reach? How many towers will be needed? It would be nice if they could be combined with cell phone towers as I really hate for this beautiful rural county to be marred with more towers all in the name of progress. Can these towers be disguised as trees or something? Is there an alternative to towers? Lots of questions to be answered.
Anyway, if a community meeting can be organized, I will certainly attend. I also volunteer to put up posters or flyers in public places around Goldston to let people know of the meeting if given enough advance notification myself. Perhaps others will do the same in other parts of the county. Not everyone gets the Chatlist or the newspaper but they do stop for gas or lunch even in the most rural areas and flyers in a restaurant or convenience store or beauty shop may help advertise a meeting.

Greetings --
Need help or just want some advice? I'm friendly, competent, I travel, work weekends and evenings, and my prices are reasonable.
Spring is in the air and even I am doing some spring cleaning on my own computer (a rare occurrence). Think about it.
Some of the computer services (for PCs (with Windows) and Macs (with OS 8x through OS X)) I've rendered in the last couple of years in and around Chatham/Orange/Alamance counties:
----------------------------------------------
Setup and Installation
Internet Connections
Networking
Troubleshooting
Virus/Worm/Trojan/Adware/Spyware Removal
Instruction (applications use and systems maintenance)
Data migration
Web Site Maintenance
Access, Excel and Database Creation and Maintenance
-----------------------------------------------
I've done technical support; systems, database and network administration; and instruction for educational, research, and business organizations for over 20 years in advanced capacities. I prefer working in the Chatham/Orange area and I love my job!
I'm both Windows and Mac knowledgeable, and have no preference for either platform. I have accompanied several clients to the Apple Store in SouthPoint, and to online Dell and Toshiba for Windows purchases. I'm pretty sure everyone is happy with their choices!
Contact me to discuss your computing needs. I'll provide local references at your request.

-------------------- 30 -------------------- Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2007 06:15:11 -0500 From: Jackie L Strouble <ajaks7-at-juno.com> Subject: Need firewood
Winter is almost over. That means it's high time I started cutting and splitting firewood for next year! The woodstove is my only source of heat, and laying in a wood supply is a year 'round task. Due to the high price of everything, I can't even afford to run back up from a space heater anymore. Does anyone out there in Chathamland know of some decent hardwood for the taking or for the cutting? Do you have a dead or fallen tree you want cleared off your property? Oak, hickory, ash and beech are all great -- please, no gum or pine. The woodstove doesn't like gum or pine, or any of the more resinous woods. I use an electric chainsaw (no fumes, much less noise) and would be happy to pay for the electricity used. If that doesn't suit you, or if the wood is more than 150' from an electrical source, I'll cut it with a timber saw. Either way, I'll haul it out by hand and by wheelbarrow. My style is very low impact. I've been cutting wood this way for years. I can use everything, from the trunk (logs) to the branches (kindling) to the twigs (tinder), as long as it is sound. Thanks! -- Jackie Strouble 967-4253 ajaks7-at-juno.com
