Reminder about Classified posts

This is a friendly reminder (again) that no matter when you send in a classified post it will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist. Please do NOT email me asking where your classified post is. It will not appear until the Friday Chatlist. If you send in your classified post on Friday AFTER the classified chatlist has already gone out, guess what? You classified post will NOT appear until the FOLLOWING Friday's Classified Chatlist.

If you get an automated receipt after you send in your post that means we HAVE received your post. Regular emails are posted within 24 to 48 hours. Of course, classified posts will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist.

The Friday Classifieds are very popular and it's not unusual to have over 30 to 40 items on the list. Do NOT email me about a missing post unless you have double checked the chatlist again.

The general rule of thumb is that you can post the same service or the same items twice in a row or twice in a month.
Please adhere to this rule. It also helps a lot if you use some descriptive text in your heading besides FOR SALE ie used TV for sale, yardwork services, Queen-Size Bed and lots of other household stuff

Last item! Please remember that the Classified Chatlist is a FREE and popular community service. Neighbors like dealing with neighbors and it's nice to buy stuff or services from folks you "know". Following certain guidelines makes it a better experience for us all.

Ed Coffman writes

In my opinion, when one chooses to live in a rural area, one chooses to live with animal smells, hunters, and whatever noise your neighbors choose to make. If that is not to your liking perhaps you should move to a more regulated area where people are not free do as they choose on their own property that they have owned for generations.
--
Actually we no longer put up with hunters trespassing and we don't have to put with other objectionable behavior. One's rights are limited in any community. We could have a noise ordinance in Chatham if this becomes a serious problem.  If that is not to someone's liking, he can move to a less populated area.

For Dwain,

It seems apparent that the neighbors you have are low class.
Not because they ride 4-wheelers, or shop at wal-mart.
Because they lack in respect & sportsmanship. Just as in boating you are responsible for your own wake.
Just as in being a good christian you are respectful of your brothers.

It's just sad.

If it was my neighbors I'd experiment with some third shift firecrackers.

Subject: Chatham County Noise Ordinance

Dwain,

A county-wide noise ordinance was passed by the Board of Commissioners last August, largely in response to compaints about the noise from the music festival twice a year at Shakori Hills.

It is fairly inclusive, and it does address noise coming from motor vehicles that do not use standard manufacturers' muffler systems. You can find it on the Chatham County home Web page under the Ordinances link.

I've lived in a very rural part of the county for 27 years, and we have always respected our neighbors' preference for not running loud machinery on Sundays unless absolutely necessary. This is a tradition that my neighbors revere, and out of respect for them, we have tried to adhere to as well.

My point is that regardless of whether there are rules against such obnoxious noise as you describe, good neighbors don't behave that way. I certainly hope you can resolve the problem. Certainly if you can't reason with your neighbors, the sherrif should enforce the noise ordinance in your case.

Respectfully,
Kate Dunlap

I live about 7 miles west of Pittsboro just off Hwy. 64.  The quality  of life out here has been great until this last year.  My neighbors  have young sons who they've given 4 wheelers and the weekends have  become very noisy.  I have complained and even called the Chatham  Sheriffs department to see if anything could be done.  The deputy I  talked to said he knew the people who are my neighbors and would talk  to them.  I had spent 3 days listening to the roaring engines.  After  the call the neighbors have taken off the mufflers and added straight  pipes and this has amplified the noise.  And now they make a point to  ride down the Hwy right-of-way to my driveway which is very loud.  I  can't turn up the tv loud enough to drown it out.

Does anyone know if there is a way legally to deal with this noise  nuisance?  It's like living next to a dragstrip every  weekend.  Obviously, if they stay on their property I don't think  much can be done.  They don't care if they bother the  neighbors.  They've even built ramps you can see from the road that  they use for jumping.

>

Ultimately, you are correct.  It isn't about providing DSL to customers, or providing quality phone service.  It's about making the most money for the least expense.  That's how businesses operate, and they make far more money by putting DSL capable hardware in urban areas than they do in rural areas.

There ARE options, however, and one that I have been contemplating for a number of years now.  That idea is the coop ISP.  IN a nutshell, it would be a cooperative ISP that all members would pay for and support.
The idea I had originally was to have Sprint run a T1 line to my house, which they would happily do because a full or even fractional T1 would generate a good bit of money for them in terms of installation and monthly charges.

The problem is that I dont know that there are enough people in my area within usable wireless distance that would be able or willing to pay for it.  Unfortunately, with the exception of cell based aircards, I dont see any other alternative at this point.  If I thought I could do it and break even, I would certainly consider it, including maintaing the routers and switches here in my home office (or in an insulated building on my property, with a transmit tower to provide wireless coverage for my surrounding area.  But as I said, I dont think enough people in this area would be willing to pay and use the service and I would take a big financial loss to set it up and administer it.

Maybe we could convince Blast to set up a tower out in certain areas and handle it that way, again in a co-op type environment.  I would certainly allow them to put a tower on my 10 acres to help provide access to the Bear Creek area around Mays Chapel road and Rosser Road.
But that too, is probably a pipe dream.

Jeff

Subject: Four Wheelers and "Neighborly Consideration"

Ed writes in response to Dwain's complaint about his "neighbors" on 4-wheelers.

"In my opinion, when one chooses to live in a rural area, one chooses to live with animal smells, hunters, and whatever noise your neighbors choose to make. If that is not to your liking perhaps you should move to a more regulated area where people are not free do as they choose on their own property that they have owned for generations."

Having lived in various levels of "Rurality" all my life in this area, I've been fortunate to have had decent neighbors that generally did what they wanted on their land, but kept a consideration of their neighbors in mind.  My family and our neighbors would have been terribly ashamed if a neighbor felt it necessary to complain.  And neighbors would have been ashamed to complain unless it was absolutely necessary.  Especially when living on family land, a certain Christian respect of others would be the norm.  Imagine one's ancestors in Heaven, looking down on the land they worked their whole lives to create and leave to their heirs so they could lead better, more comfortable lives; watching their offspring jackass around on four wheelers and showing their butts to their neighbors.

According to Dwain, his neighbors not only didn't try in the slightest way to be considerate to their neighbor, they made things worse by removing their mufflers and taunting him by repeatedly driving right in front of his property.  I don't know what remedy there is for this situation.  I'm sure Dwain doesn't want to be a Hatfield to his neighbor's McCoy, but that is surely what they deserve.

If anyone knows these "neighbors", maybe they could implore them to be decent.

Subject: My husband, My hero "the flying squirrel catcher"

So my husband and I have had this annoying, never ending issue with flying creatures in our home since we moved in. The first flying creature happened to be a bat. Not an easy task to capture a bat, my landlord suggested I use a jar; she obviously has never tried to capture a bat before. Thanks to my neighbor that creature is history. The second creature we had previously misidentified as a chipmunk, and up until midnight last night when we had the unnerving privilege of a closer approach to what we now know is or should I say WAS a flying squirrel. These varmints will literally drive you crazy and destroy a home in the meantime. Two days ago I was cleaning out our bedroom closet going through unworn clothes and doing an all around spring cleaning when 2 large chunks of the ceiling literally fell on my head. I looked up and there he was with his big brown eyes looking down at me. The little booger had chewed through the sheet rock. And not only that, he took one of my husbands' sweatshirts and chewed it up and made a nest in the top of our closet. As I am sure you could imagine this sent me over the edge and into a state of "survival of the fittest", it was beyond the point of trying to live with it until warm weather comes. These squirrel's have chewed through photos, clothes, sheet rock and who knows what else we haven't seen in the crawl space upstairs. Not to mention all the massive amounts of squirrel terds we are going to have to clean up. They were no longer cute and fuzzy with big brown adorable eyes; I wanted them out of my house. The survival race was on!

I called my landlord, who I had previously been quite pleasant to regarding this situation and this time handed her an earful of how upset I was that it had been over 2 months and I was ready for a full nights sleep. I told her that between the varmints scurrying through the walls and my dogs running around trying to capture a sound without a face, that I was spent. I explained to her that I may not have the neatest house in the world but I am definitely a clean person, I asked her to come and look at the house, see for herself that this was in fact not a result of an unsanitary environment..
She tried once again to come up with some grand plan, (remember the bat and the jar idea, another grand plan), well I stopped her mid sentence and explained that it was not something that I was willing to live with anymore, and that she needed to have this problem taken care of and now. I also told her that a rodent's feces can carry diseases that could cause someone to become extremely ill if not dead. When I mentioned this, it seemed to capture her attention. Finally. Well she had our neighbor come over (the same one who caught the bat, nice guy always coming to our rescue) and he put metal up outside the house where they had chewed through and were coming in. Now not only could they NOT get in the house now, they couldn't get out either. Oh boy, this made for a long and interesting night.

The first capture was a little after midnight. We had just gone to bed less than 30 minutes before and I was still reading, when I heard something crash in the living room. I woke my husband up and we went to observe the mayhem.
What we found was a very wet (from dog slobber) and very scared flying squirrel. It seemed to think that the corner behind the turtle tank was the safest place to hide. After a few minutes of my husband and I bickering about the proper container to catch it in we both had the bright idea at the same time to get our daughters minnow net to capture it with. I'm not sure if it was because I was so tired and so anxious to catch this thing but whatever the reason I just started to laugh hysterically, which in turn made my husband laugh as well. You don't always get your brightest ideas around 12:30 in the morning and our method of capture may not have been the most humane but it was most definitely humorous. By 12:45 we were back in bed and laughing ourselves to sleep, we had won, well for the meantime.

At a little after 5 this morning I hear what sounds like someone throwing small rocks at my bedroom window, from the inside. Under normal circumstances I would have thought just that, but my first thought was, here we go again and at 5 am no less. My husband, who by the way appears to be sleeping soundly, sits strait up in bed when I elbow him saying, "What's that?"  He gets out of bed to turn the overhead light on and I cover my eyes with the blankets. I am waiting under those blankets in hopes that he will confirm that there is indeed someone, hopefully our 3 year old daughter, throwing small rocks at our window, but instead I hear him say, "Keep your eyes on him." I peeled the blanket down from my eyes just far enough to see it sitting on top of the window sill, amidst my rock collection. From the kitchen he asks, "Where is Ellie's net?" I'm still lying in bed with the blankets up over my nose with no intention of getting up and wondering at what point in a past life did I do something to an animal that made me deserve this. "I don't know where the net is, it's 5 in the morning." And then it started to climb the window trying to get away from Sprocket (our Plott Hound) who was staring it down and I yelled for my husband to come back. He came with net in hand and ready to catch. "Go get another container," my husband says to me. I nervously get out of bed and head towards the kitchen to look for another cookie tin or Tupperware container when I see Zoë (our Rottweiler) staring at the wall with her little nub of a tail wagging furiously. I looked up and there were 2 more squirrels climbing the walls. Needless to say I screamed. I am awake at this point.  I yell for my husband and he retorts with the obvious, which is, "I only have one net."
The laughing starts again and I am beginning to wonder just how many flying squirrels are in my house. We caught (my husband caught them, I supervised)
5 flying squirrels before we left the house this morning at 8 am.
Ok, so I realize that our method of catching flying squirrels might not be considered the most humane but I've had just about all I can take of these varmints.  At least I'm not shooting them with a BB gun, not that I haven't thought of it. They will drive you out of house and home and before you realize it you are at the point of no return and you are up at 5 am with your 3 year olds minnow net and an old Christmas cookie tin yelling obscenities at a creature that has no clue what you are saying. We weren't being remotely quiet during this whole process either and somehow our daughter slept through it all.  Can I please tell you that a hundred plus pound Rottweiler is not that great at catching flying squirrels nor is a Plott Hound, but they do find it great fun to run up and down hard wood stairs chasing them all night long. Bless them both for keeping these flying rats on their toes for I imagine my lucky dogs will sleep all day. And my husband, the flying squirrel catcher, he is definitely my hero!

Deliriously yours,
Monica

My response:

Hello Ed,

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion.  Some of us like the country for the peace and quiet not roaring engines.  I don't think I should have to move because I have a neighbor who is NOT neighborly.  I think the line was crossed when the mufflers came off and the straight pipes went on.  So I'm glad you enjoy your 4-wheeler noise, I don't.

Subject: Thank you from Pittsboro Animal Hospital

I would like to say thank you to those who have said nice things about me, my staff, and my hospital.  It is truly appreciated.   As a newcomer to Pittsboro it is nice to know that we have been able to meet your expectations.  Here are a few "happenings" at PAH:

  1)  We are pleased to welcome Dr. Chad Aderhold, former Medical Director at Apex Veterinary Hospital, as a visiting surgeon.  Many of you may already know him, but he has been practicing for over 15 years and is skilled in performing many orthopedic surgeries such a hip, knee and fracture repair.  Because of this venture we are now able to offer repair of common orthopedic injuries at a much reduced fee.   For example, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) repair at a Cary specialty clinic is approximately $2-2,500.  Dr. Aderhold's fees for CCL repair averages $1-1,200.  He has many happy patients, clients and is well received and respected.  So if anyone has been postponing surgery due to cost please give us a call!

  2)  The Doggie Spa is soon to open.  Our newly remodeled groom room is now complete except for the plumbing (no plumber seems to show up!).  Someone recommended Freedom Handyman but I cannot find his number.  If you know it please email me.  Once complete we will offer times when you can "do it yourself grooming".  Of course we still continue to offer complete grooming services.

  3)  Rabies Clinics-$5 rabies shot (no exam).  The times are noon-3 on the following dates:  May 15, Aug 14, Nov 30.

  4)  As always our toenail trims are $5, with all that money being reserved for medical care to pets in rescue organizations.  As small thing we can do to help unwanted pets in Chatham county.

  5)  Dental Special:  February is dental awareness month but unfortunately not all pets need their teeth cleaning in February.  For that reason we always offer a special for routine dental work...$160 includes preanesthetic bloodwork, IV catheter, IV fluids, ultrasonic scaling, polishing and flouride treatment.  Any extractions or heavy tartar is additional.

  6)  Emergencies:  I have been reading lately the concern for emergency veterinary work.  My personal cell phone number is on our after hours answering machine.  I am happy to take calls anytime of the night and weekends.  If it is something I can manage at my facility I am happy to meet you at the clinic.  However, if the pet is in critical condition needing 24 hour care I may still need to refer to Cary.  Thankfully most emergencies are not that critical and can be managed over the phone, at my clinic or even the next day.

  7)  Our email newsletter is a hit with over 100 subscribers in the first month!  You do not need to be a client to benefit from information so feel free to sign up!

Thank you and here's to happy and healthy pets!

I must say that for once I am glad the western part of the county has something the eastern part does not have, DSL. Of course many of us are in the 336 area code. We have Siler City addresses but Siler City is a long distance call. People are often shocked that in our rural area DSL is available. It is very surprising how few people take advantage of the high speed internet.

Randolph Telephone does a great job with their DSL and has great service. It is more expensive than the Siler City cable system but is much more reliable. I believe that Randolph Telephone, being a private, rural carrier, can and does take advantage of Federal programs to provide the service. In my opinion Embarq is too big and does not worry about their rural areas because there would not be enough users to justify the cost of the equipment.

Once you go high speed dial up is not an option.

If you like the security clearance procedure at airports, then metal detectors at our government schools are your answer to the problem. The mere suggestion makes my blood boil. Here we go with yet another way to distract from the reason to go to these suffering institutions to begin with. That, by the way, is to educate.

This problem starts at home. My boys may do some inappropriate things at school but taking a weapon to school with intention to wield it wouldn't cross their mind....because their parents have taught them better. A parent is responsible for the actions of their minor age contributions to society.
Right?  If you are the parent of a chump thug with intentions of harming another child with a weapon at school then YOU should face criminal charges.

Why our school system turns a deaf ear to this problem is, and should be, a concern to everyone in the community, even if you don't have children attending these schools. If a child should be harmed at school by another student would a staff member, at any level, be affected legally? My guess
is: No. Like many other outcomes resulting from government monopolies, there is no incentive to do anything that directly addresses the problem. Instead the idea of installing metal detectors at middle schools is the popular action. Let's treat 'em all like criminal human debris. Is that the fair thing to do to 95% of the school population? Dare you suggest that resources be used in such a grotesque way? Is there a backbone in the crowd willing to look this problem in the eye with the REAL intention of correcting things? A school board member would do....

Will any satisfactory action be taken to remedy this problem or will we allow political correctness to win this battle too? At some point we must not be afraid to be mad as hell and unwilling to take it anymore. This war is worth waging. Anybody with me?

Potential High School site waste water
February 20th, 2007

More on waste handling at Jack Bennett Road site from the Division of Water Quality:

The handling of effluent is still germane and now an explanation of the following quote is appropriate as well: "upon construction of the school, and upon completion of Phase III of the wastewater treatment plant construction." When will phase III be completed?

Subject: Coming next week - BOE member Kathir Russell's Blog

Just wanted to give my fellow Chathamohicans a heads up that BOE member Kathie Russell's blog is scheduled to be up next week.

I think it's great that we have some members of our elected boards communicating with us via blogs - BOC member Mike Cross, BOE member Gerald Totten and Kathie Russell.

I'm open to working with other elected Chatham County officials to set up blogs for them.

Subject: DSL on River Road

Many of you who live on River Road may already know, but DSL through
Bellsouth is finally available.   (It may be available in Fearrington  now, too).
I had been calling and sending emails to Bellsouth  for years!  I saw the lines going in in October, but the workmen told me it  would be
December...December came and no DSL.  I kept calling  BellSouth.    Finally, I sent yet another
email and found it was  available (Bellsouth did not notify me as they said
they would - no  surprise).   So, if there is anyone left on River Road who is
still  waiting like I was, it is now available.  I don't have it yet,  but it's
ordered!!!   Thank goodness!!!

Town manager arrested by trooper

PITTSBORO - Pittsboro's town manager was arrested this morning in the parking lot of town hall.

Samuel W. Misenheimer, 42, was charged with driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest.

According to Lt. Everett Clendenin, a state trooper pulled Misenheimer over at 7:50 a.m. after he rolled through a stop sign on Thompson Street in downtown Pittsboro. Misenheimer did not have his license, Clendenin said, and Sgt. B.C.
Williams discovered it had been revoked.

Misenheimer argued with the officer and would not follow instructions, Clendenin said, so Williams told him he was under arrest.

Misenheimer resisted arrest and received cuts and bruises to his head and hands, according to Pittsboro Mayor Randy Voller.

As town manager, Misenheimer oversees the town's police force.

Clendenin did not know why Misenheimer's license was suspended, but according to police records, Misenheimer has 11 speeding tickets dating back to 1984. His most recent speeding ticket was Jan. 29.

"This happens all the time for people with lots of speeding tickets," Voller said.

Subject: About vets

I am really glad for everybody who loves their vets and I want to mention our wonderful vet.  Doc Walton, in Siler City, one of the best vets I know.  She has been incredible for us and our animals and is great to work with.  She has enormous heart and a great sense of humor, values sustainable practices and is an all round great woman.  But what I really love about Dr. Walton is her incredible skills as a vet.  I am a nurse and as a nurse I can tell when someone is full of ... well, you know, when it comes to medical care and as a nurse who happens to own livestock and has had more than our share of animal emergencies, Barb Walton has always impressed me as a brilliant diagnostician and technician (not only can she tell you what is wrong, she can usually fix it with great skill).  Her skills are amazing, her knowlege base is awesome especially when  it comes to unusual situations.  I have had vets (some of the ones mentioned as great on the chatlist) tell me things that were
absolutely factually wrong that  resulted in the loss of an expensive animal and others who clearly were in over their heads and were trying to fake it.  I have  never had that sense from Barb Walton and  am always impressed with her amazing gifts and keen intuition.  I can't say enough good things about her.
