I really can understand frustration when it comes to patients and the medical community. I really think that the doctors have no idea sometimes how there staff is handling their patients at the front of the office. Even when it comes to making appointments you have some staff that will tell you they have no openings till 3 months from now even though you have a condition that warrants to be seen immediately. Taking my children to doctors in the past 8 years I met up with terrible treatment with some of the staff not the doctor because the doctor did not know what was going on or what his staff was telling patients. If I do not like the way my children or myself are being treated then I in turn tell them they can just pack up my records and then I send a certified letter to the doctor telling him exactly my thoughts and I switch doctors. I have received responses from some doctors that they did not know what is going on at the front of the office but they were very happy that I called it to their attention. I just don't deal with it and can take my children to another doctor who has caring staff. Sometimes people are in the wrong line of work when dealing with the public in the medical profession and maybe they need to rethink their job choices. Aurora

I know it's about time we all let this go, but I've been reading the back and forth over the flap at Pittsboro Family Medicine. People are getting pretty heated about this and obviously their reactions depend on the particular experience they've had. Obviously it's absurd for a potential patient to be charged for sitting in the waiting room, and obviously there was a big communication gap going on there! The common thread here is that the problems usually seem to involve the front office staff. Our family also has had very mixed experiences with this practice. The doctors and nurse practitioners have been wonderful, but we've had some incredible bloopers with the front office folks and in fact we decided to seek medical care elsewhere. Doctors are only as good as their front office staff, and it sounds like this group of folks is really having a negative impact on their reputation. What would really make a difference would be for some individual to let the doctors know what's being said about their practice on the chatlist. Perhaps the problems are high turnover, or poor pay, or poor communication--they could be any or all of those things. But they will not be addressed unless someone who cares makes the practice aware of the problem.

I utilize a vet in Cary, is because they provide a substantial discount on stray animals. I don't know of any rescuer who wants this done for free and stray cats, for example, do not show up at the right times and dates for spay and neuter clinics. POP (Pet Overpopulation patrol) comes to Pittsboro monthly and offers greatly reduced prices for all vet services - POP is a fully furnished mobile unit run by Dr. Wendy Royce, DVM - 919-942-2250.
For years, Chatham County Animal Control has ignored the stray animal population leaving it to concerned citizens to trap, vaccinate and fix these animals. But with so many vets in Pittsboro, it should not be up to the county to provide low cost spay and neuter. One new vet in Cary rapidly built his practice, simply by offering rescue help to folks like me. Word quickly spread, and now he has several rescuers bringing their pets and referring others to his practice.
Chatham is a unique place and people are looking for community-minded businesses and professionals who offer their idealism by helping the community. I wish all Vet's good things, but I have found most vet practices are very unfamiliar with the cost and procedure for addressing the stray population. Many of us have spend countless hours and dollars to address this problem. The fact is that some vets do help routinely - not for free - but for about half the normal cost- and it does nothing but help their business and the community.
The high cost of fixing animals also discourages poor people from having their animals fixed and hence contributes to the overpopulation problem. So until things change here, it's off to Cary for emergency care and help with the overpopulation problem.

Any time that I've called the answering service for Tri-County after hours, a vet has met me at the clinic and has taken care of my animals' needs. Now, I'm not saying that this has not changed, but this has always been my experience. And a word about the doctors: Tom Redding and Margaret Alexander have been there for many years. Tom bought the practice from Ralph Houser probably 20 years ago, and as far back as I remember, I've always been pleased with any doctor that has seen my pets there.

Just a reminder:
Pet overpopulation is at crisis levels in Chatham County. There simply aren’t enough good homes for all the dogs and cats born here every year. We all bear the burden of this problem through increased costs for animal control.
Benefits of spaying or neutering go beyond population control. Fixed animals behave better and are healthier, including having reduced risks for many cancers.
Many folks recognize the benefits of fixing their pets but cannot afford to do so. To help, Chatham Animal Rescue and Education is offering subsidized spay/neuter clinics for Chatham County residents on public assistance or with household incomes below $40,000. Surgery will be done by Dr. Wendy Royce of Pet Overpopulation Patrol, a mobile veterinary practice, at the Wal-Mart in Siler City. A $20 co-pay per animal is required at registration. Please bring proof of income.
The next surgery dates are March 3rd and March 24th. Registration will take place Saturday, February 17th, from 9 to 12 at the Chatham County Animal Shelter on County Landfill Road. This will coincide with the county rabies clinic at the shelter.
Be part of the solution. Get your dog or cat fixed!

> Subject: Tina Meeks' aircard update
Tina,
Thank you for following up and telling us the result of your experiment. I just ordered the same booster antenna you used. My current booster antenna is a smaller model with less gain. Who knows if that'll make a difference but it's worth a try -- there are so many variables in what makes cellular services work, including your local terrain, all anyone can do is try things.
For others who would follow Tina's path, it is very important to get the KPC650 aircard model. The other major model that is offered by the local carriers is not capable of accepting any external booster antennas! If you don't get the KPC650 it isn't worth trying, and I know some of the carrier stores try to push the inferior models (probably because they have to move the stock). There may be some new models since I looked into sevearl months ago, so if you get a different model MAKE SURE to verify it can accept external booster antennas, and that there are actually antennas available for it.
It's also worth noting that we are taking about real, engineered booster antennas that are designed to work with a specific aircard model, not the scam boosters that you see advertised on telephone poles in the area.
As a side note for fellow geeks, Kyocera bought their aircard and handset business from Qualcomm, which is the company that invented the technology used by Alltell, Verizon, and Sprint (if you have a phone from them it probably has a tiny "digital by Qualcomm" sticker on it somewhere), so it isn't surprising that their aircard would be the best choice.

There will be a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.; pancakes, sausages and fruit, all you can eat for $5.00 for adults or $10.00 for a family. Proceeds will benefit local social concerns. St. Bartholomew’s is at the corner of Rectory and Salisbury Streets in Pittsboro. Mardi Gras attire is welcome. Last year’s palm branches from Palm Sunday will be burned just before 6:30 to prepare the ashes for Ash Wednesday’s worship services. There will be three services of Holy Communion, with the special Ash Wednesday liturgy, on the next day, February 21, at 7:30 a.m., 12 noon and 7:30 p.m.. Everyone is welcome. John Simons

We have had to take our dogs for emergency care before. We have always gone to Veterinary Specialty Hostpital in Cary. From northern Chatham is is about a half hour. Once you get on 64 is is pretty much a straight shot. We were more than happy with the care our dogs got. The price was not cheap, but well worth it. When it was time to put our dog down, his doctor from VSH volunteered to come to our house to do it and he would not accept payment. This is far better treatment than our dog ever got from his local vet ( who is less than a mile from us). I wish that we did have a competent, local vet who was open for emergencies.
