Now Alan Baddour has essentially done the same thing, begging the question, what does Pittsboro wanna be when it grows up? There has to be a vision that has the potential for general consent out there somewhere. Here's five ideas for the commercial development aspect of that vision to hopefully get the ball rolling: 1) A haven for musicians, street music, a little slice of 6th St. from Austin Tx? Like Friday nites at Bynum General Store except on steroids. I can envision the old Ford dealer lot downtown packed, four bands playing, crowds milling in the street having a great time.... spending money in our shops and restaurants. 2) A haven for artists, potters and crafters. Maybe the town, county and a private developer join forces to produce a huge gallery as a showcase for artists from all over the region. 3) Same idea as above, except for antiques dealers. Take what we've already got started, make it bigger and better-known across the southeast. Make Pittsboro a destination for antique shoppers throughout the SE. 4) What about great food and restaurants, fine dining? Well, it's pretty well documented that can't happen without liquor. How about a contingent effort to bring liquor by the drink to the town/county. 5) There are already a good number of other towns in NC that have participated in Main Streets program, a federal grant to help pay for the revitalization of the downtown commercial district. We do have the necessary concentration of downtown historic building as a base to work with. This program takes a concerted effort to get going, but could prove very beneficial. Pittsboro is a "charming little town", but many local businesses appear to be struggling. It needs an economic spark to rev it up, to stay healthy. The list above contains just a few ideas...maybe good, maybe bad. Can we use the Chatlist to gather ideas that might lead to consensus. Or, let Mayor Voller hear from you with your ideas. I am selling two items made of alligator skin (and that's not just an allegation) which I bought in Argentina and have never used. One is a billfold, 4 1/2" x 3 3/4", and the other is a wallet of the type that is normally carried in the breast pocket of a man's coat. They are $75 each.
