Thank you to all who attended or sent checks for the burrito bash this past Monday at the General Store Café. We grossed more than $3,000 which will allow for some WOW items in the children's room at the new library. We appreciate your support.

Ms Shook,
My family has been served by Pittsboro Family medicine for several years. I have been to many doctors and lived in different places around the country. I feel that my family has received absolutely the best care possible from Pittsboro Family medicine! We dearly love Dr Corey, Dr Bergert and Leslie Sharpe (our favorite!).
Ms Shook I feel that communication is the key. I am not always a good communicator and in my pregnant moments (which I am currently in) I can be unbearable. But the good folks at Pittsboro Family Medicine have always treated me with kindness and respect, despite my ill attitude.
As for the billing issue, I believe that using the term "fraudulent" is a dangerous one. Better be careful about that. That is a strong accusation that can come with strong consequences. If you use GOOD communication your needs will be met at Pittsboro Family Medicine. I have questioned them for years and always felt pleased and confident in their responses.
One last thought - I stopped by the clinic last week to pick up some paperwork on my pregnancy and on my way in I noticed a man shoveling woodchips around the landscaping. When I came back out I realized it was Dr Corey!!! How awesome is that - I even called my husband - I love our doctors! He could easily have the work hired out. But he CARES - and it shows! Doesn't sound like a scheming, fraudulent doctor to me. ....

Snowflake,
I agree that particular building has become a troubling spot in downtown Pittsboro. I certainly acknowledge that these things can happen, and are more likely to occur when an owner ceases an "old use" that probably wouldn't be allowed under today's zoning (not that I've checked). One can certainly point to individual parcels that are problematic, and also to specific properties that have been well developed or re-developed.
But as downtown Pittsboro transforms, and it will, the question in my mind is -- how will it transform? Will we rely on individual landowners to do the right thing, to create that patchwork quilt that in time becomes our old favorite? Or should we, the citizens of Pittsboro, create a vision - and lead that vision? I am not advocating that the government control how any specific piece of property is developed. Instead, I suggest that an overarching plan, that takes into account economic development, unique attractions, culture, walkability, nightlife, light industry, recreation, government facilities, and ultimately, the overall health and sustainabililty of our downtown, will GUIDE and SHAPE Pittsboro. If a vision is properly created, with citizen input and oversight, and then Pittsboro and Chatham are able to overlay a mix of grants, low interest loans, zoning concessions, and tax incentives and dis-incentives, we can encourage private investment in our vision.
I, for one, am not satisfied with simply crossing my fingers and hoping places like the General Store, S&Ts, Beggars and Choosers, Biolex, and Chatham Marketplace will go on existing forever, and that people like Chatham resident Robert Poitras will continue to open places like the Carolina Brewery (coming soon!). We must do more.

Hello out there in Chatham Land! Just wanted to give a few updates: As we have said before, February is National Pet Dental Health Month. At Hope Crossing Animal Hospital, we are offering 10% off professional dental cleanings. If your pretty pup has pretty bad breath, it may be time to get those choppers cleaned. February is the month to do it in! Just in time for Valentine’s kisses! Also, speaking of Valentine’s and love, we truly appreciate our clients. To prove it, we have instituted a client referral program. For each friend you refer to us that come in and is seen by the doctor, we will give you, our already loyal client, 20% off your next visit. That is not just on professional services; that is merchandise and food as well! We believe that word of mouth (and the Chatlist, of course!) is our best advertisement. We believe that for all the hard work and PR that our clients do, they should be repaid! Also, if you check our website, you will see that we have some puppies for adoption. (We have a board here at the hospital that also posts anyone we have for adoption.) They are almost 13 weeks old. Their mom was a CARE rescue, and she was WAY too pregnant to spay. So she was brought home and had the pups. She had ELEVEN little black lab puppies (mom is a chocolate lab). We believe they are 99% lab and possibly 1% Traveling Salesman. These cuties are looking for a good home. There is a nominal adoption fee, but they will go to that home with all their shots, de-wormed, and they will be spayed/neutered. 4 of the sisters went to CARE, and they have adoption plans. Please visit our website or call for more information. They are not on site, but visits can certainly be arranged! So… There is a lot happening here, come by, call or visit our website. We would love to see you! Or even “e-you”! And, to everyone- Happy Valentine’s Day! Hope Crossing Animal Hospital 58 East Cotton Rd. Pittsboro, NC (919)542-1975 www.hopecrossing.com

Hello Chatlisters,
Someone wrote today asking if there were any yoga classes in the Pittsboro area. Yes, there is! I teach 6 classes a week in my studio downtown. I have a phenomenal group of dedicated participants and so most folks continue to re-register each session. That means that I use a waiting list so sometimes it takes a little while to get in. Once you do though, you become part of a wonderful, supportive, enriching community of people so I invite you to go to my web-site below and then contact me. Susan -- I appreciate your dogged determination to get a clear answer. Many of us have tried, only to find that we are getting charged more for our water .... I had drafted the following in response to your first query, and then because of the higher water bill :) did not send it, however, following is what I drafted: Susan, Our neighborhood also received the flyer about Chatham County "drinking" water. Problem is ..... we've been receiving this kind of flyer over a period of YEARS (yes, Gene, I guess I'm shouting). The flyer says there is no immediate problem, but the flyer suggests that over a period of time ..... the flyer also suggests that the water's not good for folks with health issues. For several months now, when I go to get a drink of water from the water fountain at the Millennium Sports Club, there's a copy of the flyer posted .... basically what it seems to be saying to me is, "Drink the water at your own risk". Many thousands of new homes are now scheduled to be built in Chatham County .... with children, schools, YMCAs, adults with health issues, babies with health issues ..... if Chatham County cannot consistently provide safe water in 2007 (and 2006 and before) how can the incoming population be served? I also would like to hear more input on the water saftey levels. Thank you.

My neighbors and I received a flyer in the mailbox last Friday that said the trihalomethanes in the Chatham County drinking water reached unsafe levels, as demanded by the EPA. Was anyone else disturbed that while the flyer posed the FAQ of "When will it be fixed?" it did not provide the answer? The answer provided was that the town manager had contracted a firm to develop a plan to provide a solution to the problem. That doesn't provide a timeline nor an expected end date. The flyer also didn't provide information on how to create safe drinking water for inside a household using this water. I sure would like to hear this. Will charcoal filters on the faucets work? Is it safe to use on dishes and in bathing? Although I've researched this byproduct of the water treatment process online, I'd like to know the specifics of our water in this county and their work-around recommendations. I do not know the doctor in question nor am I familiar with Pittsboro Family Medicine. I do know that one should assume they are paying for the time of a professional unless you have asked if they give a free consultation. Most do not. To be fraudulent the doctor would have to have led you to believe the meeting was free and then billed you. Whether you are getting your car fixed or getting a will if you decide you want to interview the mechanic or lawyer you should make sure the time is granted free or you are likely to be disappointed.
Though an attorney I do not have a dog in this fight. I do not bill by the hour ever and I do not charge for an initial conversation. This policy do not apply to the entire firm.

I don't know for sure but I have a sneaking suspicion that a "come on down" invitation was issued for Chatham County also & Sprint just wasn't prepared for the sheer number of people who took up the offer!
Seriously, I'm NOT speaking against people moving into Chatham, I am saying that (here we go again) the infrastructure isn't in place to handle the sheer number of people relocating here.
I think our current problem with poor phone service is because Sprint was happily "charging just a little more" and giving their shareholders nice dividends and not adequately preparing for the future when North Chatham started a population explosion. Sprint then started providing services to the new population centers & diverting their resources at the expense of rural areas which were (& are) allowed to fall way behind. Telephone lines were spliced & re-spliced when they should have been replaced years ago & I doubt if they (or Embarq) will ever catch up to current technology. By the time dsl reaches the rural areas, I imagine there will be some new technology and rural Chatham will be left behind again. That is, if there is a rural Chatham in the future. Seems that folks are moving into our boonies as fast as they moved into North Chatham!
I hope Randolph Telephone has prepared for the future if many people take you up on your invitation to move to Bennett & I hope Embarq sees the handwriting on the wall & prepares for an influx of people into Chatham's rural areas in the very near future!
Oh, I see your invite was to the city folk - well, they mostly already have dsl - but if your invitation extends to us dsl-less rural folks, do you know of any great farms for sale in Bennett?

I've read w/great interest the back and forth on DSL and wireless srvice; its unavailability through Embarq in not only well populated areas but rural areas also. I live in a very rural area, Bennett. Randolph Telephone Company is the 'phone company I have to use. Imagine my surprise when I was told, "yes, indeed I can have DSL." Not only that, if I sign a two-year contract, installation, equipment, etc. was free. I'm absolutely thrilled. Four computers are hooked up, two wireless. Any problems, I can call and they either fix it from their end or walk me through what I have to do it. Admittedly, the service is more expensive that Embarq, but it is certainly worth it! So, all you city folks, "come on down!"

Hi Snowflake and Everyone Else:
The old car dealership repair shop in downtown Pittsboro is for sale. No - there are no environmental problems. The EPA inspected and approved it for sale after some contaminated dirt (oil, gas, etc.) was removed several years ago.
Yes, I completely agree - its an eyesore. But it is for sale and until it is sold, nothing will be done to fix that.
Currently the building is being used as a race shop for our son, Michael. www.michaelcooperracing.com When the building is sold, we will build a new race shop for him. Until then it is a great place for him to work on his race car and truck.
Some potential buyers are looking at the building and may buy it. Negotiations are ongoing. Last we heard they were discussing buying the parking lot behind the building from the Presbyterian Church so a fire escape could be built and possible parking spaces created. The fire escape is required by code. I think parking is also a city code consideration. I have no idea what these potential buyers are planning for the building.
We would love to sell it!! Maybe someone will used the building for store and/or restaurant space below and office or residential condos above. It is a large building and has a lot of potential.
Anyone interested in buying it should contact us. Until then, Michael is happy using it as his race shop.

To the previous chatlist post regarding Hughes Net service, I'm sorry I misplaced your post I had printed out to respond to directly. We have had Direcway and now Hughes Net for the past few years. I agree, the service has been horrible. The modem speed is sporadic and whenever we call Hughes Net we ALWAYS have a difficult time understanding their customer service representatives. I believe they had previously mentioned that their 800 number is based out of the country. Just wanted to share our experience with you and let you know you are not alone in your frustration with them. We recently upgraded to their DW7000 modem with little improvement. Nevertheless, it's still faster than dial-up. I'm going to take a fellow chatlister's advice and go to the Embarq site to post my request to bring internet service to our area. All the best, Linda

Sarah Shook has brought up several important and sensitive areas of the "get acquainted" with your doctor dilemma. (Parenthetically, I had a patient moving to a part of the country where I knew no one. They asked me for a recommendation. I started with the Family Practice Academy Directory and then added, "Find a doctor who has been sick recently!") Assuming Sarah Shook had no opportunity to meet Dr. Burgert outside the office (church, grocery store, etc.) the best way would have been to schedule a "well child" visit for 2 month old Jonah at about the time he would need one anyway. Thus Jonah's needs and Sarah Shook's and Dr. Bergert's time would have been appropriately utilized and charged and paid for without concerns of fraud if a third party payer was involved. This would have provided her with the additional insight into how Dr. Burgert interacted with Jonah, probably the most important aspect for Sarah to evaluate the doctor. The unfortunate reality is that all the staff Sarah interacted with have to be paid, and the overhead of having Dr. Burgert's office even exist is probably near $3 a minute and at least $2 a minute. The time spent with Dr. Burgert is the only source of revenue to offset that overhead. Primary care physicians spend the most time with patients and are paid the lowest amount of money per hour.

I personally like doctor Holt as he was my family doctor as a child and now takes care of any problems my 6 children have. They are also on call on the weekend when my children always get sick.. Also if you are self pay like myself they are very reasonable with there prices.. The receptionist, nurses and doctors always make me feel very welcome and I never wait in the lobby over 5 minutes.. I'm sorry you had some unfortunate confusion while trying to meet with Dr. Burgert recently. It may be too late to convince you otherwise, but I did want to encourage you that he is a super doctor. Very personable, thorough, and interested in properly providing care to his patients. I was very fortunate that he accepted me as a patient when I was into the 3rd trimester of my 2nd pregnancy back in 2005. (I got tired of dealing with the drive, parking, long walk, etc. to the Womens Hospital after they relocated all of the OB-GYN care to the hospital.) Little did he or I know that my pregnancy and labor experience would become a little more than normal. To spare you the details, I'll just say that I was so impressed by and appreciative of his availability, concern, expertise, etc.
Good luck with your search, Kelly

Yes, I am concerned about our water, as well, and the frequency in which we have received these announcements.
The information is definitely incomplete. The notice is titled "Notice to the Public." Midway the page it states, "Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursinghomes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail." Schools, businesses, etc. are the public. Notification is the Town of Pittsboro's responsibility, isn't it? I wonder what our Health Department thinks of continual high trihalomethanes in our water and the town's notification procedures. I would also like to know when the last assessment of our pipes was made.

Chapel Hill, NC - The university and greater communities are invited to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's dedication on Monday (Feb. 12) of George Moses Horton Residence Hall, formerly Hinton James North, now named for a slave and poet from Chatham County.
The 4 p.m. dedication will be held in a tent outside Horton Residence Hall, which is located at the corner of Manning and Bowles drives on the South end of the Carolina campus.
The dedication marks the first time a building at Carolina has been named in honor of a slave and Horton Hall is believed to be the first university building in the nation to carry a slave's name. There are four buildings on the Carolina campus named in honor of black faculty and staff.

Sarah,
I do not know Dr. Burgert so I am not claiming he is ethical or not. But the thought occurred to me about how unusual your request may have been to his office and how it would be for most physicians in my experience. I am not aware of any doctors who will meet with someone without a formal charge being incurred. You are using their time that they could be seeing patients.
Secondly, I wonder if there was a misunderstanding and the office person meant that you would need to come back with your child and be charged for a visit with the doctor.
This is just my gut reaction to this post and I may be completely off so I hope you will take these thoughts in the manner I mean them...no offense meant.
Brenda
