Reminder about Classified posts

This is a friendly reminder (again) that no matter when you send in a classified post it will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist. Please do NOT email me asking where your classified post is. It will not appear until the Friday Chatlist. If you send in your classified post on Friday AFTER the classified chatlist has already gone out, guess what? You classified post will NOT appear until the FOLLOWING Friday's Classified Chatlist.

If you get an automated receipt after you send in your post that means we HAVE received your post. Regular emails are posted within 24 to 48 hours. Of course, classified posts will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist.

The Friday Classifieds are very popular and it's not unusual to have over 30 to 40 items on the list. Do NOT email me about a missing post unless you have double checked the chatlist again.

The general rule of thumb is that you can post the same service or the same items twice in a row or twice in a month.
Please adhere to this rule. It also helps a lot if you use some descriptive text in your heading besides FOR SALE ie used TV for sale, yardwork services, Queen-Size Bed and lots of other household stuff

Last item! Please remember that the Classified Chatlist is a FREE and popular community service. Neighbors like dealing with neighbors and it's nice to buy stuff or services from folks you "know". Following certain guidelines makes it a better experience for us all.

Subject: Water Quality

Chatlisters, Is anyone else looking for some answers on the water quality problems in Pittsboro? The mayor wrote to me after seeing my Chatlist post and I emailed back, asking for answers with dates and still haven't heard back. Please help by writing to him and your commissioner, too! This is what was written:
Dear Mayor and Commissioners,
I live two lefts past Horton Middle School in the Magnolia Place development. You can look up my address: 25 Juniper Court, Pittsboro.
This email still doesn't tell when the problem will be solved. If you saw the notice that was sent, there was a date range when the problem ocurred and the listing of the problems that will be caused: liver, kidney failure and cancer. When the notice posed the question, "When will this be fixed," the notice's own answer was that the city had hired a contractor to look at developing a plan. Please understand that this is not a good answer. Why not tell when the contractor was hired, when their plan is due, the date range of the plan's actions, and the date that the solution will be in place so that the public has a better idea of what the Town Manager is doing about the problem? Sounds like your only answer is to hire a contractor and provide no controls over the company. It is incumbent on you to provide accountability on this. Please answer these questions directly. Thank you.

Dear Susan,

Do you live in the Pittsboro Corporate Limits or the County?

Commissioner Vanderbeck copied me on your post to the Chatlist as did my wife. The messages we send out refer to how our system has done over time. The results over the last five years are public record and mainly indicate that the system has difficulty at certain times maintaining an ever tightening regulatory noose. The State of NC has continued to raise the bar so to speak which has affected water systems all of the State including Pittsboro and Chatham County. In fact if you peruse the newspapers you will find systems large and small with a variety of issues including Durham and Cary.

We are diligently working to improve our system and our public works department is diligent and focused on providing the best possible water we can given the limitations of technology and the system we have.
Since I was elected in November of 2005 a number of improvements have been made at the water plant, the intake, the distribution system and the tanks. These improvements have been undertaken in response to recommendations from our management team and a desire by our town board to continually improve the infrastructure.

Please call me if you have further questions at 545-9624.

Thank you for your concern.

Randy Voller
Mayor of Pittsboro

>As you probably know, the municipalities and the county have different raw water sources. The county supply comes from Jordan Lake. The municipalities draw their raw water from our rivers....Pittsboro, specifically from the Haw. This raw water has high levels of organic (plant) material in it. Residuals of this organic material react with chlorine and produce trihalomethanes. There are various means to pretreat the water...it has been difficult to find the exact method/amounts necessary to reduce the organic material to a level that will not react with the chlorine.

>Please rest assured that all of the municipalities and the county are working hard to find the solution to this problem, including implementing tougher stream buffer ordinances and storm water run off controls that would help limit the sediment and other contaminants from getting into our water.

>>Dear Commissioners,
>>
>>I'm quite disappointed that the repeated notices of unsafe water quality mailed to our homes do not contain an adequate explanation of WHEN the problems will be fixed. The notices also do not contain information on what residents can do to counteract the unsafe status prior to using it as drinking water. The notice mailed last week provides no end date nor plan to remedy the poor quality other than hiring a consultant. That sounds open-ended and fiscally irresponsible. Please do more than hiring a consultant! Send the officials of the water system to class and spend the money to make this county an acceptable place to live. I need to hear a plan with dates then notices with updates on the plan progress. Please ask the Town Manager to put this information in his alerts.
>>
>>I'd also recommend our water officials visit Orange County's OWASA to learn how to do the job correctly, because that county continually manages to keep the water clean enough for drinking. Here I'm even afraid of letting the pets drink the water, given the information in the notices. This is an unreal situation given the high tech times we live in. There's got to be a better way. I'd appreciate the taxes I pay here to provide safe drinking water!
>>
>>Please respond with your plans to correct the current water quality and the county and town operations of the water department. Thank you!

Are there any local yoga studios/classes in the north Chatham area (including the town of Pittsboro)?  Also does anyone know whether adult education courses are given in that area as well as Chapel Hill?  Thanks.

To the folks who are helping their friends find a boxer puppy:

We adopted two white boxers from North Carolina Boxer Rescue. We couldn't be happier! Our mother and son boxers were spayed and neutered and had all of their shots. We paid $175 per dog, I believe. This was just to cover their shots and operations. These good folks really care for the dogs and do their best to find good homes for them. Here is their website:

Good luck to your friends - boxers are the best family dogs!!

Subject: DSL & wireless

I've read w/great interest the back and forth on DSL and wireless srvice; its unavailability through Embarq in not only well populated areas but rural areas also. I live in a very rural area, Bennett. Randolph Telephone Company is the 'phone company I have to use. Imagine my surprise when I was told, "yes, indeed I can have DSL." Not only that, if I sign a two-year contract, installation, equipment, etc. was free. I'm absolutely thrilled. Four computers are hooked up, two wireless. Any problems, I can call and they either fix it from their end or walk me through what I have to do it. Admittedly, the service is more expensive that Embarq, but it is certainly worth it! So, all you city folks, "come on down!"

Subject: Hughes Net - Direcway

To the previous chatlist post regarding Hughes Net service,

I'm sorry I misplaced your post I had printed out to respond to directly.  We have had Direcway and now Hughes Net for the past few years.  I agree, the service has been horrible.  The modem speed is sporadic and whenever we call Hughes Net we ALWAYS have a difficult time understanding their customer service representatives.  I believe they had previously mentioned that their 800 number is based out of the country.  Just wanted to share our experience with you and let you know you are not alone in your frustration with them.  We recently upgraded to their DW7000 modem with little improvement. Nevertheless, it's still faster than dial-up.  I'm going to take a fellow chatlister's advice and go to the Embarq site to post my request to bring internet service to our area.

  All the best,

  Linda

Subject: Revitalization in Pittsboro

Circle City has a big albatross around their neck when it comes to the beauty of downtown.  It's the biggest building, and eyesore,on the block..
What's being done to bring the old car dealer and repair building into
the mix?   Word has it there are some rather serious environmental
issues surrounding any kind of sale of this building. Just allowing local merchants to fix a display in the empty windows would be a vast
improvement!       Just Wondering, Snowflake

Subject: Unethical Medical Billing in PBO???

Just a little word of warning to anyone who visits the Pittsboro Family Medicine practice here in town.
Please be wary of any billing coming your way from this establishment.
I scheduled a "10 minute chat" with Dr. Burgert last week for 1pm.  It was an just a little meeting to go over some things before I decided he was right for the role of primary care provider for my 2 month-old son, Jonah.
When I arrived at 12:57, the receptionist didn't understand what I was saying when I told her I had scheduled a few minutes to simply talk with the doctor.  She handed me a bunch of paperwork to fill out.
As I sat down, wondering why I was filling out paperwork when I was just there to TALK, a woman approached the desk and informed the receptionist that she was there for a 1pm appointment with Dr. Burgert.
Apparently, my brief chat was not going to be priority.
I completed the paperwork and handed it to the woman at the desk.  She looked at the information and said, "Wait, this information is for Jonah?
Who are we seeing today?"
I told her for the third time that it was not an official office visit, I was simply there to TALK with Dr. Burgert.  She told me to have a seat and she would call me in a moment.
I watched through the window as she conferred with her fellow employees, who seemed equally befuddled at my rather simple situation.
About 5 minutes later, I was called up by another woman who looked mortified to say what she did: "The doctor's schedule is completely full today.  What
he would like to do is have you go ahead and register Jonah and charge   you
for   an   office   visit.... ?"  She ended it like a question, so I'm
assuming she realized how completely PREPOSTROUS what Dr. Burgert was suggesting was.
"You mean he wants to charge me for an office visit because I filled out some paperwork when he's not even going to give me 10 MINUTES of his time, much less actually examine my son.  Um, no thank you."
I make no claim of familiarity with medical insurance procedures, but that behavior SEEMS to border on fraudulent.  At best, it's completely unethical.
The entire point of the visit was to determine if Dr. Burgert was a good fit for my ideals.  I'm  grateful that the first visit was so telling and I didn't waste a bunch of time.
Consider yourself warned!

Sincerely yours,

Sarah M. Shook

Hi.  I am looking for an outside chainlink dog kennel.  It must be 6'
high and something like 10 x 10 panels would be great, but 10 x 8 is okay too.  It doesn't have to be a complete kennel, seperate panels okay as i am working off of other fencing.  If you have an old kennel in pretty good shape that you'd like to sell, please contact me via this post or call 6663-2162.  Thanks.  Nan
