-------------------- 1 -------------------- Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2007 00:32:00 -0500 From: "Al Wyllie" Subject: Curbing the electric bills with fluorescents?
I have replaced my mom's 25/40 watt incandescent bulbs with fluorescents. She had for years kept the wattage at a bare minimum with her lighting. With the lowest wattage by far on her street, her electric company had replaced her meter several times, because they didn't think she could use that little electric power. I don't know that she was able to save much more with the fluorescents, but at least she now has some decent light for no more costs.
I have been replacing my own incandescents with fluorescents as they burn out, and even replaced my outside 300 watt halogen spot light with a 65W fluorescent. My savings seem to be in the $10-20/mo that was expected. There are disadvantages with the fluorescents, in that they either have a delay coming on, or they take a few seconds to reach full power. The new outside unit bulb supposedly had a 10000 hr life, but failed after 3 weeks. The light color is not as warm and pleasing as it is with incandescent bulbs, although the manufacturers are continuing to make better bulbs. Occasionally, they can interfere with other electrical equipment...read the fine print. They don't all work with dimmers, either. You'll save a few bucks in the long run, but don't plan on retiring on these savings.
Over the years I have saved a lot more by using the Time and Demand service offered by CP&L. With this service and special meter, I use my laundry and dishwasher during off-peak hours and my savings as computed by CP&L on my electric bill are around $300/yr. The savings have been as high as $600/yr, when I also set my water heater for off-peak hours and used my programmable heat thermostat more effectively. If you don't mind a little inconvenience with when to use your power-sucking appliances, then this is where you can get your most savings. There are some requirements for this service, like being all-electric and having certain levels of insulation.
You can also save a bundle by installing a water heater timer and only heating the water 4-6 hours a day, when you need it. An electronic (Paragon) model works better than the mechanical ones you find at the home improvement stores. You can also save a bundle by installing a programmable heat thermostat, and programming the heat/AC for only when you need it or are at home. There's very little inconvenience with these two things you can do.
If you drive your vehicle more than 15000 miles/yr, it might pay you to call the county tax accessor and get a high mileage adjustment. You need to do this within 30 days of getting your tax bill for your vehicle. They will use the mileage from your inspection report, so have it handy.

Dear Jeff,
Thanks for writing that excellent post on the economics of energy-efficient lighting technologies. Sticker shock is sometimes not only illogical, but it's also perverse: When we succumb to the sticker shock of a "pricey" compact fluorescent, we deprive ourselves of the money savings you are seeing, first-hand. You did a great job illustrating the perversities of un-economic thinking.
The beauty of Chatham County's current situation (our changing climate, addiction to fossil fuels, nuclear waste in our midst, air pollution on all sides) is that a little bit of careful economic consideration yields lots of improvement on these problems.
If we just make concerted efforts at energy efficiency, we won't need a new reactor at Shearon Harris. Like your CFLs and LEDs, another very effective investment is solar-hot-water heating. http://www.newfarm.org/features/2006/0306/solar/martin.shtml Let's reconsider all that energy-wasting dusk-to-dawn "security" lighting. http://www3.uwm.edu/Dept/shwec/publications/cabinet/LIEBL/township%20brochure.pdf Building houses that exceed the model energy code would save scads of energy, and save homeowners lots of money -- thus increasing their ability to repay the mortgage. http://www.eere.energy.gov/buildings/info/documents/pdfs/26290.pdf Asking large real-estate developers to build houses close together - with walk-able access to grocery stores - will also save energy, diminish air pollution, reduce health-care costs, and put us in better position when oil becomes scarce. http://www.eesi.org/publications/EnergyandSmartGrowthPaper.pdf
We should demand that our electric utilities promote energy efficiency before they build nasty new coal-fired power plants. That kind of 20th century infrastructure will only keep us addicted to fossil fuels lo-o-ong into the 21st century. http://www.southernenvironment.org/newsroom/2006/10-12_cliffside.htm
Thanks for writing, Jeff.

The Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library ( <http://www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org/> www.pittsborolibraryfriends.org) present Paul Cuadros, Siler City's Jordan Matthews soccer coach, award-winning investigative reporter, Pittsboro resident, and author of "A Home on the Field: How One Championship Team Inspires Hope for the Revival of Small Town America," Thursday, February 22, at 7:30 PM at the Council on Aging (Senior Center), Hwy. 87N, Pittsboro. The story of the Jordan Matthews Jets is America's story as it comes to grips with how to deal with the migration of Latino immigrants both legal and undocumented. It shows how one community and one team can come together and provide a greater lesson for America on the controversial subject of immigration.
Free and open to the public. Refreshments. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Cuadros has generously agreed to serve on the Honorary Advisory Committee for the Friends' capital campaign. The new joint-use library, scheduled to open in late 2008, will replace both the current Pittsboro public library ( <http://www.chathamlibraries.org/> www.chathamlibraries.org) and the CCCC campus library ( <http://www.cccc.edu/> www.cccc.edu). -------------------- 11 -------------------- Date: Wed, 7 Feb 2007 10:52:55 -0800 (PST) From: Elizabeth Essen Subject: Free Art Class for Children at Pittsboro Library
Free Art Class For Children At Pittsboro Memorial Library Pittsboro Memorial Library is offering children ages 5 and up the opportunity to work with professional artist Kim Greene on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 3-4 p.m. “My students enjoy a calm classroom environment where individual creativity is encouraged and individual vision is nurtured,” said Greene. The class is free. No art experience is necessary and parents are encouraged to participate. Space is limited to 20 students and advance registration is recommended. Art enthusiasts are asked to bring a clip board but all other supplies will be provided. Instructor Greene has had a passion for art since early childhood and earned a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from Buffalo State College eight years ago. “I have been working with children and art in diverse settings ever since,” she said. She has taught drawing and ceramics to hundreds of children at many organizations, including the Lincoln Pottery Studio, the Durham Arts Council, the Carrboro ArtsCenter, Montessori Community School and at many other venues. She currently teaches at Bright Horse in northern Chatham County where she offers classes for homeschoolers as well as after school classes for students. Summer camps are also in the works. “My style of teaching reduces anxiety and encourages youngsters to refine their fine motor skills while enjoying the freedom of creative expression,” said Greene. She believes that drawing is a teachable skill. “Certainly there are children with artistic flair but I firmly believe that everyone can learn the basics of art through consistent, engaging art instruction.,” she said. “Not every child who learns to read and write will grow up to be a poet. Not every child who learns to swim or ride a bike will grow up to be an athlete. These are simply skills that are taught and just like these skills, art can be learned and enjoyed,” Greene stated. She believes that skill building is essential to a child’s growth and development. “It raises a child’s self awareness, boosts self-esteem and gives them the confidence to try new things,” said Greene. To register, stop by the library located at 158 West Street in Pittsboro or call 542-3524. To learn more about Ms. Greene go to www.TheBrightHorse.com.
