Reminder about Classified posts

This is a friendly reminder (again) that no matter when you send in a classified post it will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist. Please do NOT email me asking where your classified post is. It will not appear until the Friday Chatlist. If you send in your classified post on Friday AFTER the classified chatlist has already gone out, guess what? You classified post will NOT appear until the FOLLOWING Friday's Classified Chatlist.

If you get an automated receipt after you send in your post that means we HAVE received your post. Regular emails are posted within 24 to 48 hours. Of course, classified posts will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist.

The Friday Classifieds are very popular and it's not unusual to have over 30 to 40 items on the list. Do NOT email me about a missing post unless you have double checked the chatlist again.

The general rule of thumb is that you can post the same service or the same items twice in a row or twice in a month.
Please adhere to this rule. It also helps a lot if you use some descriptive text in your heading besides FOR SALE ie used TV for sale, yardwork services, Queen-Size Bed and lots of other household stuff

Last item! Please remember that the Classified Chatlist is a FREE and popular community service. Neighbors like dealing with neighbors and it's nice to buy stuff or services from folks you "know". Following certain guidelines makes it a better experience for us all.

I've seen Adopt a Highway volunteers ranging from neighborhoods to sports to couples and families, so you need not be an organization to volunteer. When you enter into this agreement with DOT, you are provided gloves, bags, and orange vests for the operation. All it takes is your time and energy.

So, do we know who the County official is? Or what department is supposed to be in charge of overseeing how a developer landscapes. Now it would seem to me to be a service to us all if we knew who was in charge and not doing their job. Talk about a squeaky wheel! Seems like we have some wheels in the county that need to be oiled because they are not doing their job. Monnda

You should call Habitat for Humanity before trucking your used monitor over there. I recently tried donating a good 20" Sony Trinitron and was turned away because they "weren't accepting any more monitors at that time." I took it to the recycling center and someone snapped it up the same day.

Subject: Littering and Chatham Downs

Litter is a matter of perspective. Mini malls and shopping venues are as much "litter" as trash tossed carelessly out the window or left to "accidentally" blow out of the back of someone's pickup. The availability of fast food promotes littering. Lax permitting and zoning promotes mini malls everywhere. Water, light, and air pollution is increased.
I would venture to say that in states where there is less litter you don't have a convenience store on every corner or intersection. I have been told that for example in Vermont people know that tourism is big business and everyone tries to keep it looking nice. I have seen pretty trashy looking places there too but it is more the exception. It could be a matter of people feeling like they have a "right" to throw trash on the highway since someone else always picks it up.
As far as the banks next to 15-501 beside Chatham Downs goes, they should have just left them alone. Look a little further down the road and natural plant progression is in effect and there is no erosion. All you have to do is weed whack it a couple of times a year and that's it.

I am willing to employ two full time people and supply a vehicle to pick up trash along roadsides if I can get some volunteers to help offset the costs. I've got my ideas on what an operation like this would cost on a weekly/monthly basis. It wouldn't take an enormous effort to get this going.
If there are others willing to take this idea to task I've got some $ I'd be willing to spend on this effort. My payroll service can keep track of the payroll paperwork for next to nothing.

Molly, e-mail me directly for bags, gloves and hopefully a full-time job.
We'll negotiate a temporary deal while this gig, hopefully, gets off the ground.

If there is a lawyer in Chatland, will you please let me know what my potential liability is?

Interested parties can contact me directly or through the chatlist.
Mentionsof interest on the chatlist could encourage additional commitments.

Subject: Trash Troubles

I've encountered a different problem with trash.  I volunteered to maintain the recycling bin for Pittsboro Elementary School's printer cartridge recycling program.  We placed a large container at the Pittsboro recycling center just for this purpose.  It is painted with signs designating it as the collection bin for cartridges and cell phones for PES and is located at the corner of the swap shop building.

Unfortunately, there has not been a time that I've gone to collect the items when I haven't found trash in container as well.  I honestly just don't get it.  If people are willing to take the time to take their trash to the center, they why won't they take the extra steps within the center's facility to put trash in the compactor?

Thankfully the guards do what they can to ensure that the collection bin is used properly, but they can't be all places at all times.  I am so thankful for those that donate to the school, so I'll just have to focus on the good that comes out of it.  Thanks for letting me vent some of my frustrations.

> At five hours per day, the savings would be about $15/year

Elliot,

I am sure that is correct, and over the lifetime of the bulb, the savings would end up at only around 67.00.  But, man, if you only have one light bulb in your house, I feel bad for you.  I knew Chatham was rural, but I didn't think it was THAT rural.

So let's suppose that your house is my house.  And lets say that the average life of these snazzy new bulbs is indeed 8000 hours.  Now, I really dont know about your house, but at my house there are 30 light bulbs inside the house that could be replaced with these.

So by your math, at 67.00 over 8000 hours, I would be saving about 2010.00 over the life of all the light bulbs in the house.  So at your 5 hours per day figure, that comes to an alledged lifetime of 4.38 years.  So that gives me an extra 500 bucks a year in savings, PLUS not having to buy light bulbs constantly.

Now, I was only being snarky earlier when I asked if you had only one light bulb in your house, but maybe you have enough disposable income to where you wouldn't really need an extra 500 bucks a year.  I certainly dont NEED an extra 500 bucks a year, but I certainly wouldn't turn it down if someone offered it to me either.

Also, if everyone went to those kinds of bulbs, maybe we would only see a small savings overall.  But if you figure that over 2 BILLION incandescent bulbs are sold each year, each pulling an average of 60 watts when in use, the difference in power usage if everyone switched to fluorescents would be substantial.  Funny that this discussion has come up now, too.  I normally dont really care what the People's Republic of California does, but they have a bill in progress now that would eventually ban incandescent bulbs in most cases.  Not that I necessarily agree with legislating things into extinction, but considering California's power woes, that could be a step in the right direction.

Now, here's a little history.  The first demonstrated light bulb was apparenly shown in 1801.  It took nearly 100 years to get the technology to what we have now... so in the late 1800s lightbulbs as we know them were finally made available.  They haven't changed much at all in the intervening 100+ years.  Now we have compact fluorescents, LED and other low power options, so why use that old technology?  Sure it still works.
They both still work.  But we aren't typically using horse drawn plows either.  Nor are we all riding Conestogas across the country to race to our new homesteads our in Indian Country.

So there are several reasons to start uisng fluorescent bulbs, or even LEDs if appropriate.  New tech, low power consumption, and my favorite, 500 bucks more in my pocket each year.  I dont even consider the warm fuzzies that come from using a little less power than the next guy, at least when it comes to lighting my home.

Beer cans, soda bottles and water bottles, has anyone been to several other states where you pay a deposit of 5 or 10 cents at the time of purchase?
Then you take these either back to the store where you bought it and get your money or to a recycling store where this is all they do.They have machines you put your bottles in and get a receipt from it to in turn take to the cashier and get your refund. If people throw their bottles out on the roads ways etc. then who ever picks them up gets the deposit in their pocket. I have seen signs along highways $50.00 or what ever amount fines for littering. It seems to work well and has been done for quite a number of years.

Hi -

I would like to find out how much it would be to build a riser with one drawer that I could put under an existing cabinet. The riser would need to be 25"-26" wide, 14"-15" deep and 6"-8" high. I don't know that I can do it right now, but I am trying to get an idea for the future. The cabinet is made of a very heavy cherry wood. The riser would definitely not need to match. A nice visual contrast would be fine too. I could send pix. Please email me directly with questions or other responses. Cabinetry or woodoworker recommednations would also be helpful.

Thanks!

After this tip from resident greenbuilder at Earth Renewal Shelter- Mike Harrelson- I installed a timer on my waterheater. It works like the timers you can put on a lamp, having a dial, where you just set the time or times you want the device to turn on or off.
My waterheater now comes on for an hour at 3am and 3pm.  Those are off-peak time electrical rates and they are cheaper. There's plenty of hot water for showering, doing dishes or what not- and it saves alot on the electric bill.
The timers can be purchased at Lowes.

Another faithful 'Knight' has fallen...

I am speaking of my fellow Lions, Mr. Clinton Bryan of the Pittsboro  Lions Club who passed away Saturday, and Mr. Thomas Andrew of the Siler  City Lions Club who passed away last night, both having spent a good part of  their lives answering the challenge of Helen Keller who, in 1935 at the National Convention of Lions Clubs, called upon all Lions to become her 'Knights of  the Blind'.  This group of dedicated individuals responded in magnificent  fashion becoming the world's leaders in the effort to irradicate preventable  blindness.
Clinton and Thomas have served their communities  proudly and well.  And they both will be missed by all who knew them, loved  them, and served with them.
Our thoughts and prayers are with their  families.  May God's love be with them.

I know many of you will be asking how you can pay tribute to  their memory and the service they freely gave to those less fortunate.  I  would ask you to consider becoming a Lion.  Join the knighted crusade to  help the vision and hearing impaired.  It would be a high honor for them  that someone would take their place in the fight to shine light through the  darkness for so many who otherwise would not know some of the simple joys  of life that we take for granted.  The work that Lions Clubs International  does around the world is being seriously threatened by dwindling ranks as are so  many of the service organizations that people have come to rely upon.  You  can make a difference.  To paraphrase the words of John Kennedy- Ask not  what your community can do you.
Ask what you can do for your  community.  Great things are done by those who are willing to think great  thoughts.  Join us.

Subject: Chatham Commissioners make planning board changes

The Chatham County Board of Commissioners amended the ordinance that established the Planning Board at their meeting today. The amended ordinance allows the Commissioners to replace current Board members and it changes the terms of office for Planning Board members so that they will run concurrent with the terms of the Commissioners.

This has the effect that appointees nominated by Commissioners Thompson, Lucier and Vanderbeck will have four year terms while those nominated by Commissioners Cross and Barnes will have two year terms. After the initial round of appointments, all terms will be for four years. Therefore, appointments will be staggered so that new appointments will be made to the Planning Board every two years.

In addition, the Commissioners established that the Planning Board will be comprised of 11 members. The 11th member will be selected by the full Board of Commissioners for a term of four years.

The decision to amend the Planning Board Ordinance was based on the Board of Commissioners' intent to:

1. Implement the Land Conservation and Development Plan,

2. Have the Planning Board engage in public education on planning and zoning issues,

3. Develop effective interactions with municipal governments in Chatham County as well as neighboring governments on planning and zoning issues and

4. Prepare an annual report of accomplishments, goals and priorities of the Planning Board.

These elements along with others are explicit responsibilities that were assigned to the Planning Board in the ordinance that established it. However, the former Planning Board had a different philosophy. Therefore, the Board of Commissioners felt it necessary to make substantial changes in the membership of the Planning Board. Moreover, the Commissioners need to rely heavily on the recommendations of the Planning Board so they need to have a Planning Board in place that shares their stated intent to implement the Land Use Plan and to revise it, if necessary.

The Commissioners recognized and expressed their appreciation for the public service of the former Planning Board members. The fact that they had a different view of their responsibilities should not detract from their service and dedication to Chatham County.

Clyde Harris---- Cross
Barbara Ford----Lucier
