Dear friends,
Evidently my post including the letter from Lat Purser on the abysmal condition of Chatham Downs was misunderstood by chatlisters and BBS members to be an excuse for the developer's failure to complete the project in an attractive manner, and nothing could be further from the truth. I am as disgusted as anyone. I merely posted the letter to show the response that I received and I encouraged other chatlisters to contact the developer. A squeaky wheel gets the grease, and it is unusual to receive such a long letter from a developer in response to a complaint.
Someone emailed me and said that the County personnel in charge of enforcement had failed to respond to repeated requests to pressure the developer to meet their obligations. This seems to me to be a big problem and worth investigating..
Meanwhile, please direct your energy and complaints to the Lat Purser group and let's see if we can get something done!
best wishes, Lynn Hayes

I'm glad the issue of trash on our beautiful highways and roads is being discussed. Just last week I collected the garbage from the road in front of my house and filled THREE large garbage bags before reaching the end of the property. The whole time I was out there in the cold with cars closely speeding by, I fantasized about installing a camera on the side of the road to collect license plate numbers of the losers whose trash I was picking up. I would love to send every one of them a bill for my time, or better yet, let the county send them a bill in the form of a big fine. Does anyone know how many people have been cited for littering in Chatham in the last year? There is so much garbage on the sides of the roads that law enforcement must catch some of the people "in the act". Maybe a few citizens caught for this violation of the law could have their names published in the newspaper to get other offenders thinking differently. If there is anyone on this Chatlist who is interested in really doing something about this problem, I'd be happy to be part of an anti-litter group. Adopt-a-highway is a noble endeavor, but wouldn't it be great to cut down on the problem instead of just being the Mom who picks up after the little kids?

I have noticed that those states that have a deposit on beverage containers law, seem to have a lot less trash along the side of the road...of course this would be by some considered a hidden tax....but maybe this is what it takes to keep folks from being slobs...
also, you really need to watch the energy efficient items, many times the energy to build and dispose of the item out weigh the usefulness of the item...if you want to save energy, turn down the heat, turn up the ac, don't have a dusk to dawn light(i particularly like this one, it is amazing how the power companies have fear mongered us into believing it is so important to have a d to d light, even though they need them more to help stabilize the load on their generators overnight and of course there is always the light pollution problem), use public transport, etc. etc. etc. the thing is that it might not show up so much in your bills but the more people that do this, the less power demand, the less emissions, less resources used, a no brainer in my book...

I know information on slip covers has been posted before, but I didn't need them then! Anybody have a good person who can sew up some loose-style slipcovers for a chair and a couch at a reasonable price? Thanks.

I just want to point out that the Habitat for Humanity store in Pittsboro takes used computer gear. If you can't find a home for it I'm sure they could.

Hello. I would be happy to pick up highway trash. Would anyone like to donate trash bags and gloves to the cause? (I'm unemployed). Thanks - Molly
-------------------- 7 -------------------- Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2007 14:19:19 -0500 From: "Mary Honeycutt" Subject: Trash on Chatham Roadsides
Reading recent posts concerning trash on our roadsides prompts me to make a small observation. I am a member of the Broken Arrow Archery Club and we adopted a section of Manns Chapel Rd. We always find plenty to gather from car parts left from accidents to the obviously thrown out trash such as beer cans and the more common types of light litter that gets blown out of truck beds such as paper bags or light weight construction trash. There is a new trash showing up in the county in great numbers on our section. Lottery tickets, those scratch off and throw on the ground things are EVERYWHERE! I put them in the same class as cigarette butts. Whatever your opinion on the lottery, it would be interesting to understand the cost to clean up this single item of trash from our county. Nuff said about that I guess, Aaron Honeycutt
-------------------- 8 -------------------- Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2007 17:21:56 -0500 From: "Chris Boyce" Subject: The litter problem
The litter problem must be bad since so many of us have been noticing it. In recent weeks while running along 15-501 north of downtown Pittsboro, I've been really taken aback by how much trash is along that road. It is really bad! The bulk of it consists of water and soda bottles, while the rest is made up of beer cans, cigarette packages, fast food bags, and everything else under the sun.
When I at one point stepped on a soda bottle that was obscured by some grass, the result was a twisted ankle. After saying a few choice words and running through the pain, I was fine again. Later I was pleased to see a woman bagging up trash along the street in Sherwood Forest. I thanked her as I ran by, but felt guilty that I wasn't out there doing the same.
The rate at which some people trash the roadsides here can make one feel like picking it up is not worth the effort. There is a street near my house that is always littered with trash. One day over the summer someone went through and cleaned it up. The street looked great for a few days, but within a few weeks it was completely trashed again!
Still, more of us, myself included, should get out there and clean the roads. Along with this I'd like to see more enforcement of littering laws. I'm not sure exactly how this would be done, but something must be!

Reading this list today, I am in agreement with most of what folks are saying about our county, but want to add that I really appreciate the Shakori Hills festivals, the energy, great music, food and sense of community they bring. I hope that more people will come and see/enjoy in April, and find out first-hand how much fun these festivals truly are!
Another thing I appreciate about Chatham is the deep loyalty and love most Chatham-ites have for this place we call home. Libba Adams

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Well, it's that time of year again! At Celebrity Dairy we are up to our knees in cuddly baby-goat cuteness. By this weekend we're likely to have 75 goat kids scampering around. So, our spring Open-House & Open-Barn event is this weekend!
What will you see? Dairy goats, boer goats, llamas, a peacock, free-range chickens & turkeys, guinea hens, and kitty cats will all be eager to see you and your children.
Come bring your two-legged kids to see our four-legged kids! Bring your camera to capture the joy on your children's faces as they delight in the bouncing, capering kids. Dress warmly -- depending on the forecast. And bring your hungry appetite, because hot & cold lunch items -- as well as snacks & beverages -- will be available for purchase at the Inn. Also, tours will be given of the bed & breakfast, banquet, meeting, and wedding facilities.

-------------------- 12 -------------------- From: Randolph Voller Sent: Sunday, February 04, 2007 1:34 PM Subject: News from Pittsboro
Sadly, I must convey that one of our own town commissioners, Clinton Bryan, passed away on Saturday morning. Clinton served Pittsboro for many years and had an enduring love for the community that was his home. He was a source of strength for his family and they will need support from the community in the days and months ahead.
Visitation will be at his home, 200 Ashford Lake (behind the CCCC campus), on Monday the 6th from 12 noon until the evening and the service will be at the Pittsboro Methodist Church on Tuesday the 6th at 2 pm.
The Bryan family may be reached at 542-3667.
Regards,
Randy Voller Mayor of Pittsboro
