Reminder about Classified posts

This is a friendly reminder (again) that no matter when you send in a classified post it will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist. Please do NOT email me asking where your classified post is. It will not appear until the Friday Chatlist. If you send in your classified post on Friday AFTER the classified chatlist has already gone out, guess what? You classified post will NOT appear until the FOLLOWING Friday's Classified Chatlist.

If you get an automated receipt after you send in your post that means we HAVE received your post. Regular emails are posted within 24 to 48 hours. Of course, classified posts will NOT appear until the Friday chatlist.

The Friday Classifieds are very popular and it's not unusual to have over 30 to 40 items on the list. Do NOT email me about a missing post unless you have double checked the chatlist again.

The general rule of thumb is that you can post the same service or the same items twice in a row or twice in a month.
Please adhere to this rule. It also helps a lot if you use some descriptive text in your heading besides FOR SALE ie used TV for sale, yardwork services, Queen-Size Bed and lots of other household stuff

Last item! Please remember that the Classified Chatlist is a FREE and popular community service. Neighbors like dealing with neighbors and it's nice to buy stuff or services from folks you "know". Following certain guidelines makes it a better experience for us all.

Subject: Things we love about Chatham

Okay folks, we have started working on the February Chatham Journal edition.

This is your chance to still send in the things you love about Chatham County to thingsiloveatchathamjournal.com

Or you may want to elaborate on some of the things others have listed below.

Here's some of the things folks have already sent in.

The Haw River with rocks and swirlilng water where memories of canoeing and swimming mingle with the moment, feet wet in the river.

The rolling pastures with horses and cattle grazing A magic country road that leads to a hill where sunset can be clearly seen and along the way long horn cattle, mules, goats, sheep, horses look up from various pastures...

The General store where lots of coffee has been drunk and music has been heard...

The friends who touch my life, whether new or long long time ones.

Crossing Jordan Lake when the light is particularly beautiful on the water.

The bounty that has come my way from returning to the area after years away.

The library, the court house, other buildings stores in down town Pittsboro I've been in, like Beggars'n Choosers The arts incubator where I can take pottery classes and weaving courses and be creative and social at the same time!

Hospice and Agricultural Extension agency and Sustainable Agriculture available here

The American Tobacco Trail in Chatham. It is the prettiest and most scenic portion of the entire 22 miles! Thanks to over 2000 hours of volunteer labor, folks can now walk and ride their bikes or horses on all but 320 feet (the undecked trestles) of the 4.6 miles of it!

Southwest Park in Bear Creek. The half mile-long compacted granite screenings surfaced walking trail welcomes folks to safely exercise. The ballfields give parents, their children, adult coaches and pets, a chance to bond while learning good sportsmanship and how to play together.

Weaver Creek Trail off Pea Ridge Road. A pretty hike in the woods again made possible by lots of volunteer labor. We do need more volunteers to help keep it maintained and open.

Town Lake Park and Trails in Pittsboro. A diamond in the rough that deserves more use and better care than it gets. It has the potential to be a lovely park. It is one of the best kept secrets in Pittsboro.

THANKS Trail at Central Carolina Community College. Constantly used and enjoyed by thousands each year to keep in good health. A wonderful gift to the community.

Sidewalks in Pittsboro. Thankfully used and enjoyed by many to stay in shape and to safely get to stores, restaurants, worship, schools and homes.

Haw River Trails. Another one of the best kept secrets in Chatham County that is a great place to walk a dog or experience the river and nature.

I love our history- the people who have shaped this wonderful community and the stories behind it, knowing people over time, generations of life...

I love our desire to help each other and the "take care of your neighbors" way of being

I love how diverse and colorful we are, in color, dress, personality, and spirit

I love the big trees (unfortunately disappearing at a rapid rate!), the thick lucisous plants in summer growing up everywhere, and how our lawns are full of colroful weeds and bugs, our twisty creeks and rivers, the Haw!

I love the cow pastures and rolling hills, and the bright yellow meadowlarks overhead, (the Quaker feeling around Silk Hope)...

I love our creativity

I love the courthouse circle in Pittsboro, how the roads point east, west, north, south...  I orient myself wherever I am in relation to that courthouse circle, the same way some people who grow up next to the ocean know their surroundings from the position of the water...

the arts community

the staff at the library, always ready to help

I love hiking along the Haw River in Bynum, climbing onto a rock, and watching nature float by (and time). I love Bynum!

I love all the artists in Chatham county, they are everywhere.  And the artists give Chatham County it's "colorful" quality.

I love all the music in Chatham county;  Bluegrass, gospel, rock opera, blues, rock and roll, jazz and new venue.  It's all here.  I especially like going somewhere and having folks pull out their instruments, to jam and sing.

 the sky at night

the first glimmer of Jordan Lake

seeing bald eagles there!

Taxes (vs. Orange for example!)

Land and Housing still more reasonable than Wake or Orange.

I do not have to "dress up" to shop/dine - jeans are acceptable most any place - Well I would not go to the                 Fearington Inn with jeans- and not w/ a baseball cap either!

Prices for MOST services are less expensive.

Chatham County Representatives (from Fire to Sheriff Dept. to County Seat Admin. personnel) are                 much easier (friendlier) to get along with/ to do biz with.  In part based on my experience with closing                 estates in  both Orange and Chatham Counties.

Driving an auto is less aggravating - vs. rush hour on I-40, 15-501 (in Orange and Durham Counties).

I don't have to purchase a newspaper (except for Mt. Joseph's x word puzzles!) as I get "all the Chatham Co. news that's fit to print" courtesy of Gene's "write in" audience!!!!!

The countryside.  I love the rolling hills, the farm land, the wooded = areas.

Jordan Lake.  My husband and I went on many dates there when we were = dating, he proposed to me there and we were married under one of the picnic = shelters there. =20

The country folks.  There are a lot of small rural communities with old timey country people.  They are the best.  They aren't as materialistic = or morally liberal as many people are today.  Plus they have all sorts of country cures for what ails ya!

The creative energy and people at the the NC Arts Incubator

The Person to Person Art Gallery across the street (from the Incubator)

The studio tour - both art and artists!

Grassroots political involvement (from all sides).

Old trees, rivers, and pasture land occupied by horses, cows, and/or goats

The way neighbors look out for each other

Community schools (especially Silk Hope!)

Beautiful gardens...and yard art and the wildflowers along the roads.

Uncongested country roads and the old houses, churches, barns and sheds on them.

Talking to the old timers when they share their knowledge and wisdom.

One thing I love about Chatham County is the fact that everyone waves at you driving by, even if they have no idea who you are!

I love the fact that people will donate thousands of dollars to a little boy with leukemia, even though they have no idea who he is-just that he is three, sick and needs help.

I love the fact that teachers in this County work from before school to well after for no pay and even in the face of constant criticism.

That it is not Wake County, yet.

Fresh air and open spaces, now.

Friendly people, still.

Liberal atmosphere, for the most part.

Live music venues, except for Shakori Hills.

Lots of artists and craftspeople.

Small town atmosphere with access to big town stuff, if you need it.

Elbow room.

Relatively low taxes, now.

Good place to raise a family or farm or both.

Good schools.

Wildlife, but is quickly vanishing.

Pumpkin Fest

 the beauty of the land

the overall faith that tomorrow will be a better day and we can all come together to help each other and make out community better

As a member of The League of Women Voters of Orange, Durham and Chatham Counties, I love the fact that so many Chatham residents are actively interested in, debating and participating in local government in this county.  Sure, it's often contentious, but that's the nature of politics.  It's really healthy, and if this degree of involvement existed nationally, our country would certainly be the better for it.  We are setting a standard!

As a transplant ten years ago (one of those) from the gloomy Midwest where there are few sunny days from October to April, I love the incredible blue sky and sunshine, more days than not, and the green pines against the blue sky when I am out walking in the beautiful countryside, and the early spring and the lo-o-ong fall, and the bluebirds, and the heron that fishes in the local pond.

I love the nonprofit service organizations in Chatham County and their hard working staff who do so much with limited resources, and where so many of my friends and neighbors, even those who just moved here last year, are volunteering significant time and resources.  Your readers should know that more than a third of the money raised by the Chatham County United Way each year comes from the residents of Fearrington, Governors Club and Carolina Meadows!

Subject: Pet Resource Guide

Okay, we've had lots of discussion about pets a couple of weeks ago.

It appears that there are resources out there.

What I would like to consider is creating a "Pet Resource Guide" that the Chatham Journal could compile and print as an insert in an upcoming issue.
We could also make a pdf copy of the guide available on line throughout the year.

I'd like to meet with John Sauls and do an interview (podcast to be available), lineup a list of reources includeing all the vests in the county.

We've done special issues before with our election issues and they have proven to be very popular. Out largest issue was 32 pages and we were able to print extra copies. Candidates supported the effort by purchasing advertising.

Since the Chatham Journal operates on a break-even basis, we sould have to make sure we got the ads to cover the costs of a resource guide. We migthe ven consider selling space to pet owners to post pictures of their favorite pet.

Let me know what you think.

We'll adding anothe component to the Chatham Journal.

We plan to start offering podcasts on chathamjournal.net (Terry - drop me an email and we can discuss your ideas further)

We also plan to provide links to chathamcentric videos (Mark - drop em an email and we can discuss your ideas further)

My vision for the Chatham Journal is simple - It's not just a print newspaper, it's a news content provider.
We're already providing print content, web content. We're now going to take some steps towards audio and video news content.

With over 30,000 unique visitors last week, we have an opportunity to present or link to more chathamcentric content.

Lynn, you are too forgiving.  Lat Purser has had over a year to clean up that site. The offsite damage cause by stromwater runoff, the damage silt fencing, and the IGNORING of citations issue from the state, demonstrate the LACK of interest from this developer. This upscale strip mall is a dump.  It should not be supported by the citizens of this county until it cleans up it's act.  Lat Purser should be banned from doing more work in this county. Our BOC needs to start standing up to the folks who are ruining our county.  Where the heck was our planning department who is suppose to be advocating FOR the county?

Tina,

Beware of using Hughes.net for your internet service.  I have had them since June of 2005, when they were DirecWay, and I can say that my experience with them has been abysmal.  Their servers regularly have hiccups--double-sending posts, failing to allow posts through, going down.  Their tech support folks are all overseas (first tier tech support, anyway) and, given the high quality of my Sprint/Embarq land phone line (not!), I found myself having to literally shout into the telephone to make myself heard.  I'm looking for a way out of Hughes.net, and if Embarq doesn't pony up very, very, very soon with promised DSL access, I'm going to seriously consider the Blast service.

I tested Sprint's service in downtown Moncure.  The card worked a little better than dial-up, but nowhere near as fast as my cable modem.  Sprint couldn't tell me when they would be upgrading the local service to real broadband speeds (=never), so I cancelled the service and returned the card, and then had to jump through 1000 hoops to get my money refunded.
The card worked great in Apex and Raleigh, though.  I can't afford
$50/month(service) +$249(card) just to have wireless access anywhere in Wake County on top of the bill for the cable modem service.

Subject: Appliance repair

Hi Joy,
In response to your inquiry about appliance repair.  I recommend Pittsboro Appliance on Hillsboro Street.  I went in one day  for a problem with my clothes washer.  I explained the problem and he immediately knew what it was.  He told me it was an easy fix, that I could do it myself.  I was skeptical.  I know where my areas of ignorance lie and appliance repair is certainly one of them.  Still, who wouldn't want to save a little money?  So he walked me into the back of the shop and showed me exactly how to do it on a washing machine he had back there.  He sold me a $3 part and sent me home.  Lo and behold, following his direction I was easily able to fix it myself!  I received lots of satisfaction out of being able to do this myself and saved a fair amount of money too.  Your problem may not be one that lends itself to a do-it-yourself repair job.  But never fear, he makes house calls.  In my opinion, any business owner who is more concerned about his customers then he is abo  ut making a few extra dollars is someone I want to give my business to.  I highly recommend giving Pittsboro Appliances a call.  Besides that, you'll be supporting a small, local business, which is always good for our local economy.

The program has been in existence since 1988.

The Persimmon Hill neighborhood adopted a portion of Mann's Chapel Road several years ago. It takes a couple hours of your time, four times annually, and definitely makes a difference. Since we started, the remainder of Mann's Chapel has been adopted by other groups. So, your involvement can encourage others to do the same. There's a bit of community pride, and good exercise. We have seen a decrease in the level of trash. Unfortunately you still have those who prefer to throw their beer/soda cans and burger wrappers along the roadway.

Thank you Michelle for bringing up a subject that has been bothering me for awhile.  Does North Carolina have litter laws?  In other states if you litter there are fines involved.  When spring comes around and mowers are out its even going to look worse, because the machines shred the garbage.  Also why doesn't NC have botte returns.  I came from another state that had bottle returns.  The difference is amazing.  Michelle is right maybe we should all ban together and have a road clean up day!  I for one would be willing.

Michelle's observations are spot on. My husband and I clean the road every so often on either side of "our" dirt road, but to stay really clean it would require weekly attention. Is it just Chatham? It seems that when I cross the line into other counties the problem is less severe. We had guests awhile ago, and, wanting them to see Chatham, we went here and there. Out of politeness on their part, and shame on ours, we all downplayed the huge amounts of trash on the roadsides, but it was glaring.

It seems like a disconnect that Chatham wants to attract tourists, have B&Bs, art studio tours, but cannot present itself in a better light. I agree with Michelle that we all have to be willing to help, and yet the problem seems so large and omnipresent, it seems it would require someone with an overview?

Like any cellular question, I'm sure this varies widely from mile to mile in the coverage area, but...

I'm in Moncure with a Verizon Wireless aircard and it is unacceptable.  The speed, when it works, is OK, around 150kpbs or so (which is much less than DSL, cable, etc) but it is completely unreliable. The connection often drops, I can't get a VPN to work with it, the name servers often go off line, it does long periods of only pushing through a few bytes per second, even during data heavy operations, and it does some kind of software tricks to optimize that make it not compatible with several websites.  I've also used it in Cary at a few places and not found it any better there so I'm not sure I can attribute these problems  to poor radio coverage or system design.  Also beware that it's very sensitive to which card model you buy, and the one that the local stores stock (PC 5740) is the worst one.  The KCP650 with an extra $50 booster antenna that you have to buy from the web  is what you'll need (those are Verizon model numbers, not sure what Sprint, Alltell, etc, call theirs).

However, that said if you go a mile in either direction your experience may
be completely different.  Or if the weather is different.   If you want to
try it, make sure you have a trial period where you can test it out before the 2 year contract kicks in.  And REALLY test it out the way you'll want to use it, don't just try a few things with it.  Even that may not help -- mine worked great during the trial period then got worse a few months later -- probably because more people started using the system so it got overloaded.

The Chatham Journal Weekly Web site did a 2006 poll of its readers to determine the "Best of Chatham County." The best restaurants, hair salons and exterminators all took home honors. But our favorite winner was in the category "Best wireless cell service."

And the winner was ... "They all suck."

Another chuckle from Chatham appeared recently on the Chatham Chatlist, where a poster had to send a follow-up e-mail because he previously gave the wrong Web address for a company he was promoting. The funny part was that it was a proofreading and writing company.

"This mistake was made by the sender of the e-mail -- not the company it represents," he noted.
